Default What is this?

I drive a 2006 ford f150 screw lariat 4x4, and I have had this rattling going on for while now and it's finally got to me. It's coming from the rear left on top of the frame( it looks like a block). I've already determined that this is what is making the noise by putting a zip tie on and driving around- confirmed. But what is it and what is the purpose of it ( it looks useless). Any help would be awesome! Suggestions?

-Thanks

I could be wrong but I believe that was a TSB to keep the bed from vibrating. Another guess is that it's probably missing something since it vibrating.

Ok, but it's not connected to the bed. It's bolted to the frame. And there is a big gap between the top of the block to the bottom of the bed.

Yes, it should be mounted to the frame. Its supposed to remedy the bed bounce that some trucks had.

Is this the dampener thing that gets added to some trucks but not all trucks? I thought it looked like a wheel with an exhaust hanger looking contraption but I've never really looked into it. I guess I just had that in my mind... Either way, the rear driver side of my bed likes to bounce. I think I should check mine out. I don't think I have this but could fab something up

I asked my local dealership about why the bed bounces like crazy on my truck and i got the "they all do that" answer. I knew there had to be some kind of fix. Its gotten a little bit better since i put my fold up cover on because of the weight, but i may have to look into this a little bit more now.
