Weird sound during very hot idle...
So I was stuck in traffic yet again and the truck started to get warm. The temp needle started to rise, so I put it neutral and gave it some revs to get the fan spinning faster and the water pump flowing more water. This dropped the needle down almost instantly and it never went back up. I then noticed a noise that the truck makes intermittently, but especially when I turn the wheel. Please listen closely for a dieseling sound. I don't think it's phasers....let me know what you think. Turn the volume up. Keep in mind, my truck was recently serviced for coolant flush and 180* t stat. Let's not get into another argument over 195 vs 180. I'm positive it has nothing to do with my t stat. Anywho, what sound is this??

To me, it just sounds kind of like a light phaser knock. It happens when it's really hot right? Usually, that's when phaser noise is most noticeable while it may not make the noise at other times due to the oil being thinned. Does it idle smoothly while making the noise? Or does it seem to try to shake a bit?

As long as it runs good, you should be fine, unless the noise continues to get louder over time. A way to find out if you have a real problem is get it really hot again and then brake torque it in drive up to 1,000 RPMs for about 2 seconds and then quickly let off the accelerator. If it starts shaking and trying to knock when it returns to idle, you may have bad VCT solenoids. If it doesn't do that, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine does that also. Has for years. While it's not really considered "normal" for it to rattle like that, as long as it doesn't affect how it is running, you don't have to replace them. When there is a problem is if it knocks once you let off the accelerator. That rattle should stop immediately after depressing the accelerator. If it doesn't and starts shaking and knocking, then that is a sign that they are sticking open and messing with the timing.
Here is an example of what it shouldn't do when you let off of the accelerator.
