Default Want to update my '05 XLT gauge cluster

Hi - I have a stock '05 SCAB XLT 2WD & would like to upgrade the instrument cluster to a nicer looking unit. I like the white face gauges but saw a photo of another member's truck which had 4 small gauges in the center with the tach & speedo on the outside.

Are there any aftermarket kits available to update my cluster or do I need to replace the whole unit? Also, how do the odometer readings get transferred to the new one?

It was a one owner truck with under 59,000 miles on it & I bought it in April 2018 for $10k which is a steal in my area. The glove box was full of receipts showing it'd been routinely maintained at the ripoff dealer and for some reason the trans had been rebuilt 1400 miles before I bought it. The rebuild ($3011) was done by a reputable shop & they used all HD components. I immediately had to buy new tires & replaced my battery about a month ago. It now has about 75k miles and I tow a small travel trailer so I was happy to learn my truck came with the OEM tow kit. Love the 36 gallon gas tank.

Mods:
Tinted windows - blacked out on the rears & one shade darker than legal on the front doors. I doubt a cop will give a 65 y.o. guy any grief about the tint level.
New Boss head unit w/ Nav & backup camera
14" antenna
Replaced front 20% center seat with large console.
LED interior & license plate lights
Custom order Century DCU aluminum cap with barn doors & it's painted to match the truck. No windows on the sides of the cap.
1000# capacity Cargo Glide in the bed.

The plugs were replaced with the most current version a few months ago & before I leave for AZ in the Fall it'll get all new shocks, serpentine belt, tensioner, pulleys & water pump. It may seem like overkill to replace the pulleys & pump but they don't cost much & it's cheap insurance IMHO. If I tow at a reasonable speed (61 - 63 mph) I average 11.5 mpg with the 5.4L.

The cluster you are thinking of is I believe a Lariat cluster. From what I've read in other posts of people attempting this, it won't fully work. You'll lose your chimes and a few other warning lights as the clusters are wired and made differently.

That only happens on some 06-08 trucks. 04-05 cluster swaps are issue free. However, Lariats have auto climate control and the XLT likely has manual. That said, if you make that swap, you’re AC will no longer function.

You can add an FX4 cluster. They look a little nicer. Just make sure it’s from a donor truck that had manual AC. Also, stick with 04-06 cluster. 07-08 have TPMS and the 05 does not, so you’d have a warning light on.

False. It’s not a bulb, it’s a soldered in led.

Also, that link is for over lays. If you really want to do that you can, but you have to pry off all needles. They’re fragile and you risk ruining the stepper motors. And, you’ll be lucky if you get them back in the same position.

id replace the full cluster before doing that. Been there. Ruined my original cluster.

Thanks for the advice. Is the odometer a separate part or will I need to have my info transferred over? If so, who can do that?

You’d need to have a dealer re program the mileage.

The FX2/FX4 gauges is what you are thinking of and are a direct swap without issue as long as following the direction that 2008_XL gave you. He's my 05 xltswapped without issue.
