Default VCT solenoid operation

I recently did the cam chains, tensioners, guides, solenoids and phasers. I now have a clatter at start up until oil pressure comes up. I am running a motorcraft filter (the correct one) with the anti drainback valve. Does anyone think that a new bad solenoid could be a problem? I have also changed to a slightly thicker oil to see if that would help. It's an 04 f150 5.4 3v. Thanks in advance.

Chain slap. Did you take the retainer clips out of the tensioners after you installed them?

Yes I did. I remember doing them.

Well it definitely sounds like you described a slap, which is caused usually by a loose chain... can you get a video of it and post it? The VCT solenoids don't turn on until the engine is hot.

Is it possible for them to stick on or relieve the oil pressure?

If they did, it would only affect the position of the cam, not how much pressure goes elsewhere... if you really want to put that idea to rest, unplug them and start the truck

When you replaced the timing components, were the guides broken? If so, did you drop the oil pan and inspect the oil pump pickup screen?
Did you use Motorcraft parts, or aftermarket?

The guides were not broken. Everything was in good shape except for the gaskets on the tensioners. I scraped the surface and cleaned before the install of the new ones. Something is letting the oil pressure bleed off or drain back from the tensioners. I have tried 3 filters with no luck. I wish I had a chart with the oil path shown. I am a very experienced mechanic with excellent troubleshooting skills. Was thinking it could be a bad seal in the dorman tensioner or in the dorman solenoids

It is my understanding that the ADBV only stops the oil from draining out of the filter to help limit dry starts. It has no bearing on maintaining oil pressure in the engine.

There have been several negative reports on using Dorman products in the timing system.
