Truck Running Very Rough at low RPM/Idle
The truck is a 2005 F150 Lariat, 5.4 L V8. 168,000 miles.
Starting last week, engine light came on, and at low rpm or idle, the truck shakes pretty violently. Had the code checked, and 2 codes popped up. P0021: Intake (A) Camshaft Position Timing - Over Advanced (Bank 2), Confirmed. P0022: Intake (A) Camshaft Position Timing - Over Retarded (Bank 2), Confirmed.
Can anyone here tell me what this means, and what it is going to take to get fixed? At this point, I am putting about $1000 into the truck every year in maintenance, so i would like to get it to a driveable shape, and then sell it
Let me know if you need any more information
Thanks!

Rick,
You've probably gotten no answers because there are many possibilities to the cause of your problems. My first thought was 164,000 miles. Cam chain? Tensioner? Guides? Cam shaft sprockets? But it may be a sensor issue? Cold start issue? Vacuum? It's hard to help from a distance with just the information given and if you do need a new drive kit for your cams, you'll be pushing your $1,000 a year. But, 164k is still 164k. Things wear. I suggest you get a manual and see if you can isolate this a little more.

First thing that comes to my mind are stuck phasers.
$1000 a year in maintenance is CHEAP for most trucks of that vintage/mileage. Mine consumed $3500 in 16 months.

Your codes are for a timing job . A full timing job parts runs around $1400 if done right . Cutting corners will bite you especially if you are paying for labor . If the rest of the truck good you may want to keep it if you diy it. Its a good truck and new ones are out of sight. If you just want new style etc then thats a whole other story. Onw day I might get a 5.0 engine truck but not new ,no turbos or alum body for me. Yes I think the newer vehicles will cost you a lot more to keep up .
Meanwhile, I concur with others. A full timing job is in the near future. The only parts I would throw at it might be NEW UPDATED 'OEM' VCT Solenoids, -AFTER - you have done a couple of thorough engine flush, short term oil changes. I suggest putting a quart of engine flush in about 30-50 miles before end of day shutdown. Let it set overnight, warm it up and do oil/filter change with cheap oil - a couple of times in 500 miles or so. If this doesn't help - it's timing job time. But you haven't wasted the money for new VCT solenoids. You can re-use them.
Good Luck. It is a tough pill to swallow but it's doable - even by many of us OLD farts.
