Truck dies when jumper cables off
I just bought a 2006 f150 from an individual. Cranked it and Drove It 20 minutes in to work and parked it for 2 hours. Came out to go home and it wouldnt start like a dead battery .
I jumped it and it cranked right up.
Ran about 10 minutes and died again..
Jumped started it again and it cranked right up.
But dies as soon as you take off the jumper cables.
this made me think instantly alternator was bad BUT i took it off had it tested and it passed!?
What could be my problem?

Alternator... is the battery light on, on your dash ? Our trucks 04-08 are very picky when it comes to the voltage regulator.. most places do not test under load.

okay so just to confirm.- Even though the alternator passed when off the truck it is probably the issue and needs to be replaced because they don't test under load? Looking at $212 for it so trying to be pretty sure.

I agree with the above. Get it jump started again and then put a meter on the battery and see what your voltage is. I'll bet it's not charging.

I saw other posts of people talking about the 3 inline fuses in the positive battery cable to the alternator as a possible cause too. (Dealer item only) How do I check that?

Be careful of the brand alt you buy.. like I said, our trucks are very picky on the voltage regulator on cheap alts.. I would suggest a motorcraft re-man.. or at least one with a lifetime warranty.. you may be swapping it a couple times. Rockauto has a motorcraft re-man for $180.. hurry only 1 left

Look but pleas dont touch
Have you done any work at all with any of your lights, especially headlights? Lets just say an alternator doesnt fix it for a second. Does it by chance run until you turn on your headlights? I had a loose ground beside the radiator once that would start and run great but as soon as you hit the headlights it would die. It was intermittent since it was merely loose but thats one of thos little things to think about if your alt turns out to be ok.
