Transmission rebuild/replacement

New to the forum as of today. I have a 2004 F-150 extended cab rear wheel drive with 171,000 miles. After some transmission problems I took it to the local Ford dealer and was quoted $4300 to replace the transmission. A local shop estimated $2800. The truck is in pretty good shape otherwise and I don't know if I could replace it (or if I would want to) for that much. I like the truck and have put about 80,000 miles on it in the last 10 years. Does $2800 sound like a valid estimate to rebuild/replace? Everything else works pretty good. Any thoughts on keeping the truck and replacing the tranny? Scrapping it?
Cheers, Elliot

I definitely would not give Ford dealer $4300... you should shop around a bit more, but $2800 is a tad high, also depends where you live.

$2800 was his top estimate and it could be somewhat lower. He has a good rep. and offers a two year/24000 mile guarantee. I like the truck too much to just junk it and I sure as heck couldn't replace it for $2800. I'm glad I found this site because I'll be driving this truck for many years to come I hope.

I replaced mine for $3200 in Southern California. I didn't shop around, liked the shop and they gave me a 3 year guarantee. Its been good for two years now, no problems. I'd do it if you like the truck.

Is he going to rebuild it? or just put a used tranny in it? When I needed one for my '04 last year I called LKQ and got one from an '08 that had been totaled with only 78,000 miles on it for $1000. Been 7 months now and it's strong as ever.

I paid 2900 for my rebuild at our local Aamco last summer. I know the guys there, and know they do great work. I had them put in all high performance parts and they claim it will last as long as I drive it. Showed me all the broken parts and issues. My rear thrust bearing went out, causing everything to shift back. Ground into the case, so I needed a case too. A remanufactured would have been about the same price, but would have been OEM parts inside rather than the beefed up ones.

I paid $1800 for a rebuilt plus install on mine last fall. 3 year guarantee, and from a shop thats been around with a good reputation for over 30 years. I'd look around a little more, but as said above it largely depends on where you live and who's around.
