If it were mine, and the same thing happened to me about 3 years ago, I would have bought the extra 4 quarts of Mercon V you would need to go ahead and flush the torque converter as well as all of the tranny lines while your at it. Thats the only way to get out all of the transmission fluid and have all new.

Just my 2cents but considering all of the pieces you found broken, scratches, ect. (not sure how the magnet looked), I'd make sure I got out all the fluid possible to try and flush any debris or shavings that might be present in the remaining fluid.

It's really easy to do, just helped a friend with his 04 with no reverse flush all his.

Should have posted sooner, my apologies, but something I did that helped me (as I was a little reluctant to disassemble the tranny in my truck as well) was..... I took a piece of cardboard and attempted to draw to scale (somewhat) a template of all the bolt locations that were to be removed. Then, as I removed them, I would place each bolt in that location on the template. This helped out tremendously when reinstalling everything and eliminated any doubt I may have had about where things went.

Maybe it'll help in the future but, I hope you get it going and all is good!!! Keep us posted

Update ---

Yes I have Overdrive again! Here are some comments and tips on my experience today.

I installed the reinforcement plate part XW7Z-7F282-AA on the valve body. Then I used the tool mentioned in the YouTube video above 4L60E which is a detent roller for a GM trans that I found on EBay for $9 delivered. It makes easy job of inserting in the hole beside open OD servo cylinder and pushing the OD band to the left so the detent is directly over the bore for the OD servo pin. That tool even has a spring action to hold the band there for you as you install new servo and retainer clip.

The process I used to install new servo assembly part F75Z-7H188-AA was to position the band as mentioned above. Then inserted the new servo into bore. I prepared a piece of 1.5" diameter PVC pipe which was plenty strong and then slipped my new retainer ring F2VY-7384-B over one end of pipe then using scissors jack and the pipe slowly jacked up the new servo into place compressing the spring until the channel for retaining clip was showing. Then slide up the retainer clip and quick squeeze with snap ring pliers and clip was seated. Then I slowly lower scissors jack and the servo was in place. I pulled out that detent roller tool and the OD band was in place properly on the servo pin.

I did reinstall that small triangular shaped screen using tiny dab of dielectric grease to position it onto trans body just as shown in the JMod YouTube video. It stayed up there so I could install valve body. I reinstalled the valve body in reverse of taking it off, reinstalled the electrical and then the filter and pan, then put 8 quarts of Motorcraft Mercon V in. I cranked it and the first few seconds made a horrible sound and engine seemed to stumble but then settled out smoothly. I think it was transmission pumping and catching up with new fluid. I let the truck idle for several minutes then started moving the selector into each gear for a few seconds. I then noticed a Engine Failsafe Mode warning in my info panel. But the engine was idling smooth and quiet so that didn't make sense to me.

I shut it off and pulled Tran dip stick and it looked fine, I saw fluid registering. I cranked again and still Failsafe warning message. So I let it idle more and shifted through gears while applying brake again. Each shift engaged ok and seemed normal. So after checking dipstick again I decided to add the remaining 2 quarts still in jug. I also got my scan tool and checked the code and it was for P2106 drivetrain. I cleared that code and started engine again. No more warning. I took it for test drive and shifted GREAT! Overdrive engaged as it should and truck drove like normal.

So i think the Failsafe message was from when I first started and it knew the fluid was too low. In all I put in 10 quarts of fluid. I poured the old fluid into the Motorcraft 5 quart jugs and did get around 10 quarts of old fluid to take to recycle.

So as of right now I'll say my fix was successful and the truck drives and runs great in all gears plus Overdrive again! It cost me $67 in parts and $60 in fluid so for $127 I now have truck operating normal again. Very pleased with myself. If I can do this anybody can. I used the 2 YouTube videos above for guidance and planned out my steps exactly as shown and it went great. I need to qualify that I skipped all the modifications in JMod video and only used it for tear down and reassembly. Definitely suggest this to anyone who suddenly loses Overdrive in their transmission when it was normal just prior.

ROBinGa, thanks for explaining. I ran into the same issue with my '04. I went in to replace the retaining ring and it was so broken the servo piston fell out and i found dents on it. I pushed up a new piston without any tool, just using a jack, i had no idea there was a band. I thought it was all in place. It's still slipping into neutral after the 3rd gear and i saw the video for this tool. My question is how do you know the tool works without seeing from the top like the guy in the video can? Any tips on how to position it correctly and make sure that the band and then the piston are all sitting right? any additional steps/tips are appreciated. thanks.

You can feel the pall once you get it, and the band won't move back over if it is right.

I just remember using that tool and the movement of the band felt just like I saw from the video. I guess I am saying I pictured in my mind what was happening with mine and visualizing how it was working from movement on the video. You can feel the band shift over a decent amount and then it can’t move any further. Then you insert your new part and it engages, again like the video shows it catching the slot or hole in the band. I hope you get yours workin* again. Mine is still working fine like a champ

I have been experiencing issues with O/D in my 04 Lariat. The transmission appears to go into O/D but it shudders if it's under 2k RPM. If i step on the gas quickly it comes out of O/D and feels fine. If i slowly step on the gas the shudder feels more intense and will eventually come out of O/D. Could the C clip be my issue as well? FYI, i've replaced the plugs and COPs previously, which I read could be the problem and that didn't resolve my issue.

It sounds like what mine was doing. But mine did it for years before my transmission finally gave in.
