Transmission Operating Temp
Been reading through a few threads and not finding what I want. Going to be towing the camper a couple hours away in warm temps here in a couple weeks. Just a 30 minute run the trans temp is getting up to about 205 as read by Torque Pro. I want to change the filter and add 5 new quarts but I don't think I'll have time. To the point what is the operating temperature for our transmissions? Please cite some sources if you can. Some say anything over 200 is bad, some say 225. Looking for some advice. I do have the additional trans oil cooler on my truck and it normally runs about 185-195 when not towing. Don't want to cause any damage, also current fluid is good color and doesn't smell burnt.

I've wondered this too. City driving.. low 190's for me. Highway it'll be high 170's.

My experience when towing heavy is about 180 on flat ground going 55-65. On long steep grades, I have approached 220 for short intervals. Less extreme hills are 200-205. That is with an extra transmission cooler installed inline with the factory transmission cooler. Before the extra cooler I'd see as high as 225 which also caused my blood to nearly boil over. I'm told that fluid can start to break down around 245 and the check engine light will come on if that temperature is reached and that damage to internal parts can start at 230. I can't cite any references. This is on 2 years of a rebuilt transmission. I've had the transmission serviced each year as part of the warranty and each time gotten a clean bill of health back from the transmission guy.

From the net , I have been told thermo runs 200 on our trans , so anything over 225
Is bad . I would say this is ball park . Our engine temp runs at 195 thermo .

I run a factory tow package plate trans cooler . I installed a trans drain pan and I change 4-5 quarts at a time until I run thru 20 quarts of mercon V only . Use all my fluids on large tree fires . I have a ac type temp gauge attached to trans cooler and I check it when I think I need to , towing /hot weather etc .

This is the chart I have seen, transmission FLUID life.
When it comes to transmission life... My 1999 XJ Cherokee has 237,000 miles, original transmission with a snow plow. Has a cooler and temp gauge. Never over 180*.

just take it easy and get out of overdrive before tackling any steep hills. Rest stops will also help the trans cool down, as well are relieve your bladder.
On a side note, how did you get TQ Pro to read trans temp?

That brings up a good question. When resting or when trans temps heat up, I've always been told to throw it in park and let it idle. That way it keeps the fluids moving and the fan pulling air in to cool the tranny coolers. Once you reach a safe operating temp, then you can safely shut down the vehicle. Is that what you guys do for your vehicles?

It's one of the Ford predetermined PID's that you add in the settings. If you have them added then there is 3 different trans fluid temp readings and a trans temp reading. I don't remember which one I am using. When you go to add a gauge it will show you the readings it is picking up for each method. I think only one of them worked.

When I had my 05 I added an analog transmission temp gauge and temp probe in the transmission along with a second aux cooler. If I recall I would run 185ish loaded with 6k camper on highway 200 in stop and go traffic, 170 unloaded.
