Which should I have done? I'm actually getting mine flushed at the moment but is it worth it to get the pan and filter changed? Does this truck have an actual filter? I read somewhere newer trucks don't have filters..

I just did a pan drop and trans filter change over the weekend. My truck just hit 100k and it turns out the pan was not previously dropped as the plug was sitting in the pan when I dropped it. So yes, 04-08 have a transmission filter that can be changed. Here's a thread on how to change it out:

Yes they have a filter but they are just a screen. Replacing it would just be a waste of money. Imo.

You should change the filter if you drop the pan.

If you drop the pan then yeah but theres no reason to drop the pan if you're just getting a flush done.

Most "flush services" if not all around where I live change the filter too because a decent flush service should involve cleaning the magnet in the pan.

No harm in changing it if you've already gone through the trouble of a pan drop to clean the pan and magnet.

Next time - cut one open. You'll see the nice filter media they use - what I did.

BTW - flush using no solvents - fluid only - a straight fluid exchange, using the trans pump - (and there is no such thing as a 'reverse flush' on these trannies - it's impossible - so don't get fooled by any hype to the contrary).

I dropped the pan for the second time in a month, changed the fluid, put 5 qts in, but for the damned life of me, I can't tell what the level is...I can't seem o figure out whether I have overfilled this thing...I did not change the filter again, as it only had 3-400 miles on it...

Any ideas?

Hi.

~5 qts is about right, but always confirm by following the standard trans fluid check @ operating temperature that's in the Owner's Guide. If it's on the high side, you'll wish you had installed a pan drain, lol. Good thing the gasket is reusable.

Next time, just measure what you drained.

The reason for dropping the pan was to replace said pan with the one that has a drain plug...even though I would use my handy Harbor Freight hand pump first...

Measuring what I drained assumes two things, a) that I have something to measure with (I have...a specially demarcated ex-milk jug that I filled with quarts of blue food colored water as a father daughter project) and more importantly, that I had the right amount in there in the first place.

I literally cannot see on the dip stick where the level is, there is fluid smeared all up and down the stick when cleaned, reinserted, and pulled...that is my problem...


What can I expect if I over filled the thing?
