The last time I did mine, I sucked out the old fluid from the dipstick hose and then dropped the pan. No mess. Or should I say, not near as much mess.

Great idea, I use my fluid extractor whenever possible.

The main reason I want to change the fluid is bc when going to high speed, the rpm seems to stay at 3000 and then finally shifts (smooth shift). Also the truck doesnt have alot of power. I have the 4.6 engine, 2004 yr model. Anyways, lemme know what you guys think. Thanks
Not too bad of a job to do yourself. I put a new pan in with a drain plug and just drained it a couple of times over the next few weeks and replaced the amount that came out until I had used up all 12 qts. It doesn't smell nearly as bad as gear oil

Also, this may not cure your shifting problem. I had the same issue kind of. It may be your throttle body or throttle position sensor. It wouldn't hurt to clean your throttle body and mass air flow sensor while your at it

Just FYI, so you make sure you get it all..........the total capacity is 13.9 Quarts of Mercon V Trans. Fluid.

And the gear oil does smell terrible! I serviced my rear differential a few weeks ago, spilled some on the floor of my shop, and it still smells!

Just my opinion, but, It would seem best practice, if at all possible, to exchange all 13.9 quarts at the same time so that the old fluid does not dilute or contaminate the new fluid with deposits in suspension and also, if you replaced the filter, your not also cycling that old fluid, with those same particulates in suspension, through your new filter.

Like I said, just my opinion.

Just a friendly FYI/Cap'n Obvious moment:

When you're dropping a pan without a drain, pull the bolts out slowly, and don't take them all out. I watched a guy pull all the bolts off a C6, and then reach in with a screwdriver to get the pan loose.

It looked like someone had a Kurt Cobain moment under his truck. Don't do that.

I try to leave a bolt in each of the four corners, back out the rest, then try to get one corner lower than the others.
