Years later and this thread is still great! Im doing mine as my bulk head sleeve is leaking. Im going to drill my hole while on the truck before dropping the pan. Im going to have the drain plug welded on as well. I dont ever want to worry about leaks. Im switching to amsoil and will do drain and fills until the amsoil is all in there.

TIP- Use a 1/8" drill bit loaded in your chuck with just 1" of the bit exposed. It does (2) things for you;
1) The smaller bit is a great pilot hole bit for the possible 1/2" (that's what size I used) hole you will drill afterwards.
2) With the bit recessed and only 1" exposed you won't have a chance of hitting anything internal of the pan.
Great choice of welding it. Go to any Mechanical Piping/Plumbing shop and ask for a 1/4" Thread O Let. Have it Tig welded to your pan. Ask them for a 1/4" brass or steel plug. That's how I did mine.

Finished my job yesterday. Overall was not a bad job. Welded in a drain plug for future drain and fills. Put in a new bulk head sleeve, tranny filter and tranny gasket (i know they are reusable but mine looked coroded where the seal was).
I think my pan may have been dropped at one point before i owned it as that plug from factory was not in the bottom of my pan. I suppose thats a good thing. Also, i checked and rechecked my fluid level many times while truck was running and in park. Probably idled for 20-30 minutes until i was in the hash marks. Took a total of just under 10 quarts of fresh Amsoil. Truck is a 2009 f150 fx4 with 100,000 miles.

The tranny is still nice and tight. The changes are a breeze and I use Dex/Merc from the local Wal-Mart.

During and after pics. Already had this drain plug bought so i used it. Id say the one thing i would recommend for this work is a Motive Power Fill. Worth every penny and made filling the tranny so simple.
Wont let me post pics..... never had that issue before....
