Just replaced both mine...what a PITA....get a press and take your time if you decide to change them...when I changed mine the rear u joint was horrible. Two of the bearing caps were completely filled with grinded up needle bearings...all that was left was dust. The noise it made was more like a squeak....especially noticeable in reverse.

LOL, yes they can be, hence why I just pay a shade tree mechanic 30 bucks to change mine. I have had the "clunk", "squeak", "vibration" more than once each and/or a combination thereof and all related to bad U Joints. I even lost a driveshaft a couple trucks ago due to letting it go way to long before changing.

Yes, clunk, squeak, and vibration....all symptoms. Very easy to diagnose though, put it in neutral and try spinning the drive shaft.....If it has slop or play in it, the u-joints need to be changed.

Could be ujoints or also search for thread "drive shaft clunk" and user bill2014 posted this video on the greasing slip yoke issue: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozo4hi...ature=youtu.be

Hello everyone, I was wondering if you could help me. When I'm driving and suddenly need to hit my brakes and then go to go again, there is a hard jerk. Keep in mind, when applying brakes I never fully stop. The hard jerking only happens when I go from a hard slowing motion to proceeding again. A friend says its a safety feature so the transmission isn't in a bind a breaks. If I allow the truck to roll for a second then it won't do it either. Anyone have any idea?
in mine after braking and hitting the gas agressively, i get a moment of rpm building slightly, possibly pressure building back up in tranny then this clunk happens.
so it seems to me its some kind of wear on a clutch pack or some other internal mechanism in the tranny.
normally i would say it wasnt a problem but i did have a possibly catastrophic failure of my tranny lately.
it was hesitating engaging when switching from forward to reverrse so i checked the fluid idling in park after this consistantly happened about ten times in same week.
the fluid level was just barely on the checkered area where it says to not add fluid if its this high. there was no evidence of leakage on driveway.
a couple days later i did a 150 km raodtrip where near the very end of the trip i notice some slipping or hesitation and rpm building when passing other vehicles.
on the final 2 kms i noticed burning smell and just barely got home. After looking under the vehicle it was easily apparent there was a massive leak somewhere as the whole bottom of truck was covered in tranny fluid from belllhousing back.
1. best case scenario it was a external hose leak & can be fixed for under 200 bucks
2. most likely its the front seal, $900 just for labor to remove and install tranny plus labor/parts to replace seal and do a quick internal inspection
3. those bands or cltuches that caused Stxalldway described clunking plus my seal now warrant completely rebuilt tranny $3500 installed
