agreed... use ONLY a Motrocraft transmission filter. From experience, they are less prone to failure, separating from the valve body and falling into the pan

A simple and inexpensive upgrade is replacing the factory transmission pan with the Dorman pan, it has the drain plug built in and the drain plug is in the front of the pan hump so it makes less of a mess when you drain it. Rock auto has the best prices on the pan, roughly $26.

Personally, I wish I had gone this route. I drilled the stock pan and installed the drain plug kit, and it leaked. First, from the drain plug itself. I fixed that by sealing with anaerobic sealant. Then, it started weeping from the around the fitting. Drop pan again, apply sealant again. If it starts leaking again, I'm getting this pan.

I drilled one also, but luckily used the anaerobic sealant from the get go.
No leaks (so far after 15,000 miles and 4 drains using the plug), but if it starts to leak, I am getting the Dorman pan.
Makes transmission maintenance so much easier and less messy.

As for fluid, Mercon V.
I have used Walmart brand Supertech Mercon V with no issues. It is a Mercon V licensed fluid, and is around $4.25/qt.
You can sometimes find a deal on
Amazon for Havoline Mercon V Amazon for Havoline Mercon V
for around $45/12 qts (currently priced @ $57/12 qts).

I am currently using Valvoline Maxlife ATF in my '02 and brother in laws '04 with no issues either.
Some won't use it because it is not a licensed Mercon V fluid (recommended by Valvoline, but not licensed).
It is a little thinner than Mercon V (but Mercon V thins out rather quickly to about where Maxlife starts and stays at).

Reuse the gasket, it's rubber coated steel.

Yup, Stock gasket can be reused multiple times. The rubber and cork ones that come with filters are maybe good for 1 use (unless it is the same as the OEM rubber with steel insert).

Gasket is reusable but keep changing fluid over the years .
Dorman 265-813 Transmission Pan with Drain Plug amazon

Yup^^^. No real need to spring for a flush, just do it the redneck way. Buy 5qts although it probably won't take that if you want to do it once and it looks ok or get a case online and do like above. Make sure you wipe the pan out completely and replace the gasket and filter which your doing.
Change it again after a few days of driving by just draining (no need to drop the pan again) and if it looks good your done. If it's still a little off colored then drive a few days and do it again. Do it until its nice and red.

You could reuse the gasket but they don't cost much, I'd replace it and throw the old one out just in case. Whenever I pull something off that has a gasket, it gets a new one. Cheap insurance

+1 for the Walmart SuperTech Mercon V. 20 bucks for 5 qts of MV, can't beat it. It's a semi syn, that I plan on changing every 30-50k.

Also +1 for the Dorman pan. I've had mine on there for 20k and 2 fluid changes. No leaks and is a breeze to change out fluid.

Can I disconnect the line from the oil cooler and drain the oil with the vehicle running in park or neutral? I used this method to remove about 2 quarts after I bought the truck and found it overfilled.
