Default Tranny Dipstick

I was checking my fluids on my truck today and I went to start the truck and check the fluid on the tranny. Is it normal for the tranny dip stick to be dry when the tranny is cold??? Now it did show a level in the cold marking after I let it warm up for 15 min! Just wondering if I have to add some fluid. I have not seen any stains in my driveway indicating a leak.

Thanks Guys,
Jacob

On my 2004 5.4 it shows up a littlle past the cold line when my truck is cold and if it doesn't go all the way up to where it should be for warm after 15 minutes I'd say u need to add some transmission fluid.

i hate to say this, but read the owners manual! first thing. then if its low go ahead and add whatever the truck needs. im not exactly sure about the capacity on the tranny but i would check the manual.

tranny capacity is (according to my haynes).....up to 13.9 quarts from a dry fill!

There should be a reading on the stick, even when cold. Add fluid after temp reaches normal (use engine temp as a guide).

If your automatic transmission stick is dry, even at cold, your are too low. This can cause high transmission temps, which can lead to transmission failure.

Check it often; once a week.

i completly agree you should always refer to owners manual because most if not all the information you may ever need is right in there. i just happen to have my haynes manual sitting next to me on my desk at the time....

this is the third thred i've seen you saying "read owners manual" today....lol....you have more patients than i do i would try to find a way to throw it at people thru computer. lol...
