Towing Travel Trailers

Towing Travel Trailers
I have a 2008 F150 Supercrew 5.4L 4x2 with the 373 gears. I am looking at getting a 24-26 ft travel trailer and most of them are 5500 lbs. dry. Fully loaded I figured it would be somewhere around 7000 lbs. What are your guys thoughts on if this is to heavy or not. Will be towing into the mountains and also on flat land.

If you really want help with the exact numbers head over to RV.net forums. Those guys have it down to a science and can really help.
Mine is an 06 4x4 and has a rating of 9900 towing. I have been looking at 30ft trailers and I know a diesel would pull it easier but mine will do the job. Of course I am almost exclusively on flat land.
I have a lightweight 20 footer now and it does it no problem.

I pull a 5500 (aprox 7000 loaded with gear, water, food ect) pound dry weight 30 foot TT in the summer and with my WD hitch and good brake controller it pulls, handles and stops well. You wont win any races from a stop but the 5.4 will keep it going just fine, these trucks are very solid and stable under load especially when set up right for towing. I do have an edge tuner with the towing tune which helps, especially helpful for keeping an eye on the trans temps while pulling large hills and such. I just got home this weekend from a 300 mile round trip with the camper and I averaged 11 MPG.

Thanks!
Thanks, it was a blast, we did a little kayaking on the river. I dont have bags on the truck but Ive considered it. I dont really need them but they would help when the roads get rough and the trailer wants to start bouncing a little.

I pull a 27' that weighs 6000 dry and it handles it just fine. Like said before you won't win any races but you will get there. I was told by the dealer when I bought mine that 27' was the longest I could safely pull with mine. I don't know how much truth there is to that as many are pulling 30' but he down sold me from the 29' I was looking at.
Oh yeah, one more thing a little OT from the OP but dont fall for the dealers "oh, its better to buy a brand new camper because the payments are cheaper" bull sh*t talk. Every dealer I went to tried to talk me into financing a brand new TT for 12 years because the "payments are cheaper and used trailers suck" I had to drive almost 100 miles away from my house to find a dealer that would help me buy a nice used TT.
