Default Towing with my f150

Hey guys,
So every year i go to Easter Jeep Safari in Moab Ut for "FullSize Invasion" (Check it out on instagram if you want). I usually drive my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x which is the vehicle i wheel the week im there.
I recently picked up this 08' F-150 XLT 4x4 supercab short bed with the 5.4, auto.
My question is will the F-150 be able to safely tow the ram from AZ to Moab? Pretty sure the max tow on the f150 is 8200. So the 5000ish lb ram and trailer will be right up there (7500 ish estimate)
I was planning to get a good weight distrub system w/ sway control.
What are your guys thoughts?
It would be awesome to finally trailer the ram so i dont have to worry about something breaking on it and not being able to make the drive home!
Thanks!

Read through the towing forums but you need to know what your payload capacity is. A WDH in this case is a must but you may be pushing your payload limit.

Your max tongue weight = max payload - weight of truck, occupants, and gear.

Load the F150 up with everything you plan on taking and go to a weigh station and weigh the truck. Subtract this from the max payload and that is your allowable tongue weight.

Also factor in that the trailer you are pulling will add a significant amount of weight. If you already have the trailer do some scale tests as well.

Some would tell you that you are ok, but for safety reasons I'd read through the towing section and get on the scales. You can probably pull it ok, but I'd check to make sure.

If you can find a tow dolly that would cut your weight a lot and the tongue weight would be hardly anything.

Shift the position of the Ram to adjust your tongue weight.

Towing it wont be the concern I would have. It's stopping and controlling the weight. Get a weight distribution hitch, brake controller, and like others have said, make sure you adjust the tongue weight properly.

I towed a 5200lb expedition on a 1800lb car hauler with electric brakes over 500 miles one way and a Kia suv back...only problem was could not tow in overdrive..no power.. I did have 35” M/T’s and 373 gears.. the tires made it a dog... got about 10 mpg without overdrive... tranny temp stayed below 190... like stated above .. use your load on the trailer to get proper tongue weight.

Thanks for the replies!
Plan is to load the ram on the trailer and take it to go get weighed. Whats the ideal place to get weighed? Would the city dump provide my weight even if im not dumping, lol? Ill have to google a truck weight station near me.
Ill also be getting the weight distribution hitch, sway and brake controllers too.
Ill be sure to post up the final weight and a pic of the set up as everyone likes pics.
Thx.

Default you are asking a lot

typical trailer for this should be around 2k , if you add passengers- tools and other junk its going to be close . I tow around 5500 plus tools and passenger i stay around 50mph level ground in overdrive with tow package, electric brakes . Add hills and mountains its too much .
Stopping is more important . Run trans cooler and monitor temp . Sounds like you should have another driver and split your load up . Far less money than repairs .

A lot of truck stops have scales. You just pull up and weigh and go in and get the paperwork and pay them. Dont think it's expensive but I've never done it there. Here in Idaho if you can find a weigh station thats closed you can pull thru one and just look at the weight on the overhead display and it's free.

The idea is to not have to drive the ram. Id like to have fun wheeling and not have to worry about the 450ish mile drive home.
I plan to add a trans cooler before i go. Id love to add the matching ford style auto meter trans temp gauge in the coin holder but all my cash is going into trailer stuff.
I plan to keep the OD off and cruise 50mph to help out the trans.
