Default Towing a 7x16 with the 4.6L...

Hello! I just put in an order for a 7x16 Atlas Enclosed Cargo Hauler that I will be using to tow 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. My truck is a 2008 F150 4.6 with 3.55's. I have a MBRP Catback and K and N filter currently, otherwise the truck is still stock. The trailer weighs in about 2500lbs and fully loaded I am looking at anywhere between 4500-5000lbs. I want to tow about twice a week for recreation and this will consist of traveling up to 400 miles each way. I know it is a good amount of weight for the 4.6L but if I take it relatively easy will it pull just fine for my needs? I am not all that concerned about mpg.

Should I invest in a tuner? Let me know with your experiences.

If you plan on towing it frequently I would invest in a trailer brake controller, a tuner, 4.10s in the rear and a transmission fluid cooler. That would be a nice setup for that amount of weight. The gears will take some stress off the tranny and the cooler will keep it operating at optimal temperature.

Oh, it's going to do terrible. I pulled 6700 lbs from Indiana to Oklahoma in my old STX 4x4 (4.6 and 3.55) and it sucked *** but I loved it, lol. How are the roads you will be traveling? Hilly or flat? There's a really steep grade in Missouri that I went up that slows the big trucks down to about 30-40 and I was foot to the floor maxed out at 40 with the engine just screaming. So I tell you right now, don't expect to take it easy especially if you are going to be on highways. Here's a couple vids I did on another occasion pulling a Crown Vic on a trailer. Approx weight was about 6,000. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it. Do it! Floor it and make it scream! Oh and you will be surprised at your MPG. I did 10.5 mpg on my trip from Indiana to OK. I was expecting more 8-9.

I have pretty much the same truck. And have a nearly 5k boat and trailer. In my experience its going to be a slug if you try and move to fast just click tow and take it easy and it will pull just fine.

I have a 5.4 but I was lifted 8.5" on 37s with 3.73 stock gears and towed a 20x7 foot trailer full of rock, debris and a tree on top and weighed abit over 7 tons. It was sluggish but I got the job done safely.

I will be towing from northern Ohio into central WV for the Hatfield McCoy Trail System. Would a basic 87 DiabloSport tune wake up the 4.6L a bit? Enough to notice a difference? Would you guys recommend another besides DiabloSport?

I know there will be some steep grades, but I don't think they are anything too crazy.

I recommend the SCT programmer....... A tune will help your setup a lot with just the changes it makes to the transmission alone.
