I take it the OP has never towed or pulled anything and I haven't either, so I think these questions could help both of us.

Put the clevis through a tow hook then insert the pin through the loop on the strap.. Or, if you have the right size you can get a clevis pin that goes through the hitch pin holes in which case the strap look goes around the clevis itself. It doesn't really matter as long as you're not pulling sideways on the clevis. Like I mentioned before, if I'm pulling straight from the rear I just insert the strap loop into the hitch receiver and run a hitch pin through it. If you have to wrap the strap around a frame member or something on a car just use the clevis to secure the strap back to itself.

Pull from the rear of the truck when possible and use the hitch if you have it. You can use a bumper mounted ball if necessary. Your truck is better designed to exert force going forward and this way if the strap does snap then the recoil will hit your rear bumper or tailgate instead of your grill, radiator, etc. Just use common sense, try not to jerk when you don't have to and expect that the other person will be a moron, forget to hit the brakes and do their best to slide into you after you pull them free.

i disagree.

if you are tugging from the front you have the weight of the motor over the wheels rather than an empty box.

i have no scientific proof obviously nor do i care that much but it seems to work better...in most situations.

im my experience you break more stuff pulling in reverse. especially rear axle related stuff. In reverse you are using the opposite side of the gears and this is weaker. ive also seen the most broken axle shafts in reverse
