Default top dead center or not?

next weekend i will be doing cam phasers and timing chain. i have read on it for the past few weeks and havent found a for sure answer using a search. does it need to be at top dead center to do the chain or as long as i dont move the cams or crank i should be fine just matching up the copper links to the timing marks on the sprockets? any help will be great

I don't think it technically matters but if you get to top dead center and something moves you have a reference to go back to. Look for the ultimate cam phaser repair thread by svares there are some diagrams. Good luck, take your time and have fun !

When I did mine I just marked everything and had no issues. I agree that finding TDC is a good idea in the event something goes wrong you have an additional reference point.
