Tire and wheel fitment guide for 04-08
#1081
This is for 2004-2008.
On a stock truck without leveling kit you can run 33X12.5" tires if it is a 4WD and 31X12.5" tires if it is a 2WD, using stock wheels.
On a leveled truck(2" kit and larger) you can run 35X12.5" tires on a 4WD and 33X12.5" tires on a 2WD truck, using the stock wheels.
Using aftermarket wheels you can run 35s on a 4WD if the wheels follow these guidelines:
-For an 8" wide wheel the backspacing is 5.5 inches.
-For and 8.5" wide wheel the backspacing needed is 5-6 inches.
-For an 9" wide wheel the backspacing is 4.5-5.5 inches.
If the wheel specs are not listed about you will more than likely have to run 33s or even smaller to avoid too much rubber and trimming. These specs are the basics for tires fitting well but you could run 35s if the specs are very similar but you will face bad rubbing.
For a 2WD truck and after market wheels you can run 33s with wheels that fit withen these specs.
-For an 8" wide wheel the backspacing is 5.5 inches.
-For and 8.5" wide wheel the backspacing needed is 5-6 inches
-For an 9" wide wheel the backspacing is 4.5-5.5 inches.
If the wheel specs are not listed about you will more than likely have to run 31s or even smaller to avoid too much rubber and trimming. These specs are the basics for tires fitting well but you could run 33s if the specs are very similar but you will face bad rubbing.
Remember that these are the basics to running aftermarket wheels and tires, certain tires might not rub but others might because of aggresive sidewalls.
These specs should work for most people and instances but if you are worried about fitment get the tire shop to mount the tire on the wheel and put it on the truck then turn the wheel to full lock in both directions to see and possible problems. If the tires you plan on running aren't 12.5 inches wide you still might be able to run 35s because of that reason, for a 4WD and some aftermarket wheels or 33s for a 2WD. It's best if you can find wheels that are a happy medium between the two backspaces for the 8.5" and 9" wheels because you will face more rubbing if you go for 6" of backspacing on a 8.5" wheel instead of 5.5 inches that's right in the middle.
For those who are curious. The stock wheels(17 and 18") are 7.5 inches wide with 5.5 inches of backspacing. The bolt pattern is 6X135mm.
Big thanks to PawPaw on this one.
If you have any instances where you find that these specs haven't worked for you please let me know and I'll make the appropriate changes, please PM so I will see it.
Hope this helps.

Ok, so I just bought some new wheels and I'm really nervous about putting them on. I have a 2006 f-150 xlt supercab 4x4. I have 17's on them but just purchased a set of used ford 18's with tires that are 275/70r18.....will they fit on my truck? I'm pretty sure they will...

Phew! Finally found some recent posts on my predicament. I bought a 2006 XLT a few weeks ago. The previous owner had a 2" leveling kit installed and put on 35x12.50 tires on 17" Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels. I don't know the width or offset but they do stick out from under the fenders, but there's no rubbing. I want to get a more street-friendly tire and was thinking of changing to the Dick Cepek DC-2 rims. I would like to keep the current look. That is, having a tire fill the wheel well area. I hate the look of a tire that has so much open space around it. Anyway, I was thinking of getting another set of 35s, just not as wide....if that's possible. Then I was thinking maybe increase the rim size, and decrease the tire size. Stepping up to an 18" rim wouldn't really be much of a visual change so I'm thinking of going up to 20" max. Does anyone know if a 33" tire would fit on a 20" rim without rubbing? If I did go with an 18" rim, would a "street-friendly" 35" tire work since it won't have such an agressive tread? I included pics of the current setup. BTW, everyone seems to recommend TireRack but I found cheaper prices at McCormackRacing.

I'm looking at getting a set of American Racing Mojave wheels used for a decent price. They are 17x8 with a 0 offset. There is no indication of what the backspacing is, would that make the backspacing aroud 4.5? If so on a 4x4 without a level and with a 2.5 level, what size tire would you recommend, that is if my measurements are correct with the offset and backspacing.

So without any lift/leveling kit or any mod to the tire itself, I can fit a LT285/70/R17 Tire in my 2005 F150 XLT 4x4 with no rubbing as long as i use an aftermarket 8" wheel with 5.5" of backspace? New to all of this, just need to be absolutely sure before I commit.

They will fit. That tire is 32.7" tall and 11.2" wide. A 4x4 will fit up to a 33x12.50 size tire without a level/ lift.

Just got raped by my local tire shop. $2180 for 4 new Toyo Open Country A/T II tires (35x12.50/18) and 4 new Dick Cepek DC-2 rims. They'll mount and balance for free, include valve stems and lower the alignment fee from $90 to $50. They also offer free rotation for life, free flat repair and some sort of Spline kit (?). I told them I found the DC-2 wheels for $170/ea. with free shipping from 4WheelOnline.com and that has a $50 rebate from Dick Cepek. And the tires for $252/ea. (w/ $155 shipping) from OnlineTires.com. This place (my local shop) claims to match any price (local AND internet) but they launched into some BS about how I would pay more for alignment, mounting, balancing at some mom & pop type tire place.......and that if the wheel gets damaged during mounting, they'll replace it, the smaller shop won't etc., etc.. Well, I think that in the end, even if I paid more, I'd still pay less than what they wanted. Being stupid and impulsive, I went ahead and made the deal with them anyway. Maybe I'll take advantage of the free rotation and make them work more by having it done every 2000 miles. :-)

Quick question. I might be getting 305 70 17 nitto terra grappler tires an I currently have 17x9 wheels which to what I've read have 4.5" of back spacing. They are eagle 197 series. Will they fit on my 05 f150. I have a 2.5" Leveling kit. I need a quick repsponse thanks!
