Default 2004 5.4- Remanufactured engine

Glad I found this site! I bought my 2004 Supercrew 4x4 XLT new- it had 28 miles when I drove it off the lot. My previous truck was a 97 4x4 supercab with a 4.6. At 248k miles (still ran and drove like new) I decided it was time to get a new one.- loved the new body style! As long as I can remember, the new 5.4 had a faint tap at idle. Dealership said it was typical of the 3V engine. As the miles added up, it seemed to get louder. I always changed the oil at 3000- 4000 miles with 5w20 oil. Never used or leaked oil.

But at 163k miles it gave up the ghost. Top end went nuts- missing, clattering, but oil pressure was fine (on dash gauge).

Long story short, I read of others' similar stories on this site. Instead of spending $2000-$2500 repairing an engine (which part of the components would still have 163k miles) or buying a used engine (still $2500), I went with a 100k mile warranty remanufactured engine. $2975 shipped, mechanic installed for $1100 (including water pump, thermostat, belt, fluids, and new filters).

I have a few hundred miles on the new engine (which I am pleased with so far), and it is very quiet. I have read conflicting opinions, but would like some input from those with experience. Was the original problem with these engines resolved? Anyone with remanufactured engine experience? Good or bad..

BTW, love the site. Very good looking trucks on here! You guys have me wanting to go spend some money on appearance mods..
