Just remember that these lights serve as warnings to others who drive behind you that you are there (parking lights), or are applying the brakes, or are making a turn. They must be visible by a certain number of feet to those behind you. It would be difficult to explain to the police officer (after someone slammed into you because they did not see your taillights/brake lights) because you "wanted them dark".

You may also want to contact your insurance company to see if they will cover you in the event of a rear end collision with darkened taillights.

the taillights need to visible 500 feet away. As long as you follow the instruction of applying no more then 3 coats of nightshade then you will be fine. However Bucko is right if you do apply more then the recommended 3 coats you could receive a fine. I have even heard in a few cases where the insurance company would not cover damages because the tail lights did not meet state requirements.
