Ticking noise. Is this a problem?
I have a 2005 F150 5.4L V8 with 82,000 miles on it. When it is idle it has a ticking noise in the engine. It almost sounds like a deisel truck engine when it is idleing any ideas why?

ticking noise
if the ticking noise is noticeable at 750-1000 rpm, most likely you need a cam phaser (1 or 2)

To make you feel better, do a search on "ticking"; you will see many posts on this, and then you will know you're not alone.
As squirrelyyy mentioned, you can also take it to your nearest Ford dealership. A service advisor will let you know (for free) that this noise is acceptable, assuming it is what the others are describing to you (injectors, cam phase lifters). Diagnosing a sound related fault on a forum like this is a crap shoot at best. I'd take it to the service department and have them advise me if it were my truck. |
