Default Throttle body sounds? bad fuel consumption?

I drive a 2006 5.4, For a while I thought it was my cd changer moving cd's around or something of that sort until I realized the throttle body sits under the dash pretty much. The sound starts when I turn the key and it persists while driving, I didn't start hearing this until the other day, is this a sign that it may be on its way out? For a while I have had a suspicion that my throttle body is causing a slight hesitation but I am not sure and just have not got around to cleaning it.

My fuel consumption also seems excessive, I can average between 12-14L/100km on the highway or so it tells me but I only get a little over 600km to a 125L tank, which doesn't seem right. So somehow I am burning much more fuel than it tells me.

I do need to get my spark plugs done, the dealer told me they should get done sooner than later when they pulled one due to a misfire (it didnt seperate). But somehow I don't think that would be the only cause of bad fuel consumption. I can often smell sulfur/rotten eggs when exiting my truck or behind it. I don't run oversize tires or have any modifications, I'm very easy on the throttle. The 97 5.4 I had got a little over 800Km to a 96L tank, I never changed the plugs on that one.

What things should I be looking for?

I suspect your cats are becoming plugged. This can cause strange sounds from the throttle body, particularly the IAC valve due to reversion in the intake manifold. It will also cause hesitation, poor fuel economy, loss of power and stinking exhaust.

Thanks for the input. That was something that crossed my mind as they are rattling a fair bit. Did some reading on the forum and noticed Ford charges an arm and a leg for the factory cats, but someone mentions replacing them with Magnaflow 94106 or 94306 high-flow cats. I looked at the price of the Magnaflow's and I could definitely go that route and get the parts, how much could I roughly expect to pay to have them installed at a muffler shop? Would I need to do any special tuning afterwards?
