If your gonna paint the existing one, then definantly let a proffesional do it. But , it will be very hard for even a professional to make it match perfect. The cheapest way would to be get a new tailgate online or from a salvage yard that is already the color of you truck, and it wont have any dents. Getting the existing one painted would probably cost around $500. A new or salvaged one will only cost around $200-$400.

Inside or outside? The outside you should probably replace or get a pro. If its the inside, just get some spray/roll on bed liner

Default Tailgate repaint

Just dropped my tailgate off today at a local Ford shop in Ohio for a repaint. 2008 F150 SportCrew. Just scratches from leaving the gate down and towing a utility trailer. Refinishing quote was $345.81 with a guarantee that the finish color would match the rest of the truck.
