Sounds electrical.

In my 06 manual there are 3 fuses and a relay associated with the 4x4 system

Check the fuses, try to unplug and plug the relay back in.

Check your manual for location or if you don't have one, fleet.ford.com, then go to owners manuals under the maintenance tab.

If that doesn't work you could try replacing the relay but your spending money without know if it will work.

May be the electric shift motor on the transfer case, crawl under the truck and hit the ESM with a hammer and try turning the button on the dash again......

Chances are your vacume solenoid is toast and the electric harness that plugs into it may be fried too. I had to replace my vacume lines the solenoid and the IWE's this summer. This prob with the 4x4 only seems to affect the 2004 & 2005 f-150s because the solenoid design was changed when these problems started.

Are you using the 4X4 switch correctly? Neutral with foot on brake?

You can shift into 4H at 50 MPH...Your talking about going from Hi to Low...and to beat on the ECM with a hammer...come on diamonbird...he don't even know that's the problem...

I wouldnt suggest shifting into 4x4 at 50mph even if the owners manual says its ok. I have ripped apart my 4wd on my 2005 xlt and I really saw how all that stuff works and I wont ever abuse it again. When you disengauge the 4wd you need to have maximum vacume to pull those IWE's away from the spindles, and your engine makes more vacume while at idle. And I make sure im rolling at speeds from 5 to 20mph when I engauge and disengauge the 4x4, with my foot off the throttle to avoid that awful sound of the iwe's slamming/slipping into service. Those are just a few of my thoughts on our goofy 4x4 systems that I hate with a passion.

You need to read your owners manual on proper use of your 4x4 cuz its a little different than the trucks that have the 4x4 shifter on the floor. I hate the f-150's with the **** personally. I made sure to buy one without the **** because ive seen these probs b4

Techrep, I never said beat on the ECM!
I had an explorer and it wouldn't shift into 4x4 nothing, I went the FORD dealership and asked the parts guy how much is the shift motor was and he said "4 hundred and something then he said you don't need a shift motor all you need to do is crawl under the vehicle and hit the shift motor with a hammer and it will jar or un-jar the shift motor and it will start working again", so I did this and it worked. Maybe I didn't explain it good enough for you....MY BAD! BTW ESM stands for Electric Shifting Motor.
