I know this is a super old thread but my 2017 f150 is doing the exact same thing as you decide in the beginning of your post. Did you find out what was it and how did you fix it? Thank you

Sounds like the4 IWE solenoid was letting at least one side engage 4x4 hubs . Loss of vacuum will cause them to activate , Lots of IWE sol failures due to water getting on solenoid . newer ones come with rain hood . Its hard to under stand this thread , he says he replaced actuator , that could be several parts . I'm guessing it was the solenoid , the cheapest part .
