Strange noise from front wheel
Hello,
Im new too this site, so if im posting this in the wrong location i apologize.
I was driving too work one day last week, the roads were somewhat snow covered. I was using the 4 wheel drive on occasion, too save some gas. Anyways at one point, after coming too a complete stop, i heard this loud clicking noise coming from the front drivers side wheel.
I believe it was the hub, trying too engage or disengage. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? I have a 2008 F150, 5.4 liter, supercab pick up. I work on alot of different vehicles, but when it comes too the 4wjheel drive mechanism, im not real knowledgeable.
Was there any damage done too my hub? What can i do too prevent this from happening again?

always dirty
maybe you are engaging your 4wheel drive while accelerating . this will cause a hard and loud clacking noise . and never never switch to 4 high on high speed .

IWE's, actuators, transfer case motor, vacuum lines, solenoid, have fun finding which one it is, they are all garbage.
Mine just got fixed for the same thing. For some reason the first thing they tried was the t-case motor. Then my drivers side shaft was staying engaged all the time, so they did the passenger side hub, which did nothing. Finally after the actuator on the passenger side was replaced, it was fixed....for now.

Thank you too everyone that replied too my post. Just too answer a few of the post. The ice build up possibility, i know for sure it wasnt ice build up. Only because that morning the temprature was above freezing. It was mainly slush on the roads & i did get out and verify there was none. Another post mentioned not shifting too 4 high, at high speeds. I was between 40-45 mph, when switching in/out of 4x4, according too my manuel, i should be under 55mph. I think after seeing the post from vtx1800N1, my problem could very well be in IWE, or vacuum lines. I will diagnose, & repost with the results.
Thanks for EVERYONES replies!

If it does it to you again, just switch it over to 4 wheel and the noise should go away, then switch back to 2 wheel. Other option is to slow down to about 5mph, and you will hear a clunk as it disengages.

I have an 06 and last week while driving I started getting that clicking like gears trying to engage. When I would switch to 4 wheel it would stop. After talking to a friend that's a ford tech and reading many posts on here I started doing some diagnosing. I bought a cheap vacuum pump at harbor freight and by disconnecting vacuum lines and capping the ends and using the pump to check the lines I finally pinpointed the problem to a leak in the vacuum line on the passenger side. I bought a new line set from tasca and changed the passenger side lines and walla fixed. A lot of guys have issues with the older IWE solenoids getting water in them and causing that problem but you should have the newer style selenoid with the cover on it. If it is the selenoid its a cheap fix. Like 20 bucks on eBay. The lines cost me 75. If its an actual IWE going bad it will be more. If it starts clicking often your better off taking the vacuum line off the selenoid and just camping it. Your hubs will lock and axles will spin so your MPH might drop a bit but you won't damage your IWE until you get it looked at or fixed. Do a search for IWE and there's a ton to read about. Good luck.
