Default Stock Ecoboost exhaust on a 5.4?

Wondering if anyone's picked up a take-off Ecoboost exhaust system (from the cats/merge pipe back) and put it on a 3v 5.4. Looking for opinions or reviews.

Thanks!
EK

Why, you ask?

'Cuz it's 3.5" diameter and straight-through and fits...

Unless someone here knows it doesn't.

There is no gain by doing anything over the stock exahust on an NA 3v 5.4 motor at all. You will not make more power. Stock is 2.25" so now you will need an adapter as well.

Also, I thought stock eco was 3"?

Maybe it is stock 3", that would be better than 3.5".

The thought is to step down to 2.25" after cats, merge to 3" ahead of the muffler, and try to have something stock-quiet and high flowing. Both of those pipe sizes are more velocity appropriate (than the stock set-up) for a 5.something liter, 300~ish horsepower V8.

Especially want an excuse to get rid of that 'squished' piece of pipe ahead of the muffler.

I won't deny that Ford did a good job on the stock exhaust, definitely not going to whine about 300hp that doesn't wake up the neighbors.

Looking for a different approach, possibly a lot lower cost.

Is there something wrong with your stock exhaust?

Is wanting to try something different a crime? :-P

If there's anything wrong, it's at the front end of the system.
Post-cat, there's a pair of 2.5" pipes. That's enough flow to support about 500hp.
Those pair of 2.5" pipes merge into another pipe. That's enough flow to support ~250hp.
Then there's a crimped off section of 2.5" pipe.

Maybe there's some debate as to whether or not a 5.4L 300hp engine should have 2.5" pipes after the mainfold/collector. I'm not in line with that, I stay in the lower RPM range and drive on torque. Someone looking to go all hot-rod with their truck, go for it. 2.5" b-pipes, long tubes, high-flow cats... that's a good package for those guys.

I'm not those guys.

From what I've seen about exhaust pipe sizing, a pair of 2.25" pipes is good up to around 360hp. A single 3" is good for a hair over 300hp. That's a good match right there, velocities will be much more consistent from section to section of the exhaust system.
-Velocity Is Critical For Torque Production-
-I Like Torque-

...and some day I'm looking to get a tuner and some happy programming from someone like 5-Star.

Is there anything wrong with the physical exhaust system on my truck? No, it's just fine.

Do I disagree with how it's designed? Yeah, a bit.

There it is.

Check this segment out on Engine Masters:

you'd be better off just doing a muffler swap. But if you simply want to go bigger, it's your choice. I'm not sure what will be needed to make it fit though.

Great article on exhaust pipe sizing.
