Default Steering problems, rack and pinion

Hi All

Had a clunking sould coming out of the front of my truck. mechanic said it was the rack and pinion.
So to ebay and 200 for a rebuilt rack! and to ford for new hoses.
i decided to install myself and save a few $.
what a PITA
anyways. the new rack is in.................and stiff.
1: is there anyway to adjust the stiffness of the rack. the old one i used to turn with my fingers, this one is hard to turn and doesnt come back easily, (very slow).
2: also, there was only one way the rack fits on the sterring shaft. but it makes my steering wheel upside down. i measuered the old rack up before dissassembly and set up the new rack the same way.
going for alignment in the am.
3: during this....i guess i turned the steering wheel to much and heard some plastic breaking......now lights and switches on steering wheel dont work.

please help.......

worst part................dont think it was the rack that was bad......clunking is still there.....broken swaybar link! fml

thanks in advance
