special procedure for trans fluid change?
I'm just dropping the pan, replacing the filter and gasket. And I'm gonna replace whatever fluid is in the pan. Is there a special refill procedure to follow or can I just put in whatever I take out? thanks.

Sounds about right. Mine had a reusable gasket and its as 2000 5.4. I was happy to do the extra work and disconnect the return line from the trans fluid cooling radiator. You method will only change a small fraction of the fluid. 1/3 or less.

I think you have a reusable gasket..i do on my 08..I also just filled mine up with whatever came out, was about 4.5 litres for me.

I reused the gasket as well in my 06. I thought it looked better than the new one that came with the filter.
While you have the pan off. You might want to look at installing a drain plug if you plan on doing fluid changes often. Especial has a good write up on this on the forum. It will help for when you want to slowly flush the fluid out over 6 months or a year or whatever. It will save you from dropping the pan every time. Clean the magnet in the pan obviously while you have it off. |
I recommend the drain plug as well. I installed it on mine and have swapped out 4 quarts 2 additional times since my initial pan drop 10K ago. On my 20 miles commute to work, the temp has never risen above 160 degrees.

That drain plug looks good but I would still take off the whole pan and clean it out and the magnet off after the drain.

Yes, still drop the pan every 30k or so and clean it all up.

I need to change mine in the next couple weeks as well... Adding a drain plug looks like a good idea. Any specific one work better than another?

I used the B&M, only because NAPA had it in stock
