Is the lisle tool for if the spark plug breaks? And why do you need air tools? Im wanting to get mine done but I've never really worked on engines before. Everyone makes it seem so easy. Idk if mine have been changed before but my truck has 160,000 miles on it and I don't know if the last owner changed them out or not???

...and a 12-18 pack of Coors Light! I almost thought about using my 3/8 air ratchet but I just decided to do the slow and steady way! But I have heard both good and bad outcomes using air and the slow process. So its all on what you prefer. I will say, if you have never dealt with any tune-ups prior on other vehicles I would not suggest doing this for your first...just my 2 cents.

Yea ill go with you on the 12 pack i watched a couple youtube videos of the use of the lisle tool and it helped me alot but definitely not for a beginner.. the tsb recommends no air tools but to each their own. I have air tools but knowing they might break i alotted 12 hrs and a case of Coors light and only took 2 hrs and 6 Coors lights with good ole hand tools lol

Nice!! I changed mine out too maybe 2 weeks ago as well and no broken plugs and didn't have to use PB or carbon cleaner... used hand tools as well. Put Champion 1 piece design and no problems as of yet. I used Techron every 3/4 months.. maybe that helped on mine.

well guys my i am thinking about taking on this project in a coming weekend. i have a 1/2" 18v impact that i could use in place of the air tool. does anyone think it would work as well as the air tool? on the same note, does anyone have a spark plug tool they would rent to me?

Hey guy's and gals , I'm going to take a minute and explain my experience with my plug change 1-1/2 yrs ago, as odd as this sounds and I already hear it , but here I go I took my truck(05 5.4 ) to a well known mechanic in my area to have the plugs changed and we talked a few minutes 15 -20 min before he started to let it cool, he gathered his tools the ford tool for one and his air ratchet and I said what are you doing he said I,m fixing to change your plugs , I said with the air ratchet he said yep ! I said you will break them off! he I've done this a hundred times and only broke one . I said ok you break it you fix it ! 30 min later out the door $225 broke one the back right . He said the what happens is that the air ratchet is a constant spin on the plug and keeps it from binding where as a regular ratchet is stop and go.

So I decided to do my VCT solenoids and FPDM tonight. the VCT job took all of 20 minutes to replace both. The hardest part is the getting the seals out. I found new seals on eBay for 11 bucks for both, so I didn't care to tear up the OEM ones. My original FPDM was not as bad as I thought it would be, I got my new one on eBay for 50 bucks so I decided to just replace it anyway. I don't know about anyone else but the two bolts that hold the FPDM were so bad I had to use my air ratchet to get them out! Just go this route if you can.
