I feel bad about the design change, because it literally was a 20 min fix.

Was that including the price of the solenoids?
I'm debating taking mine in vs trying to mine myself as well... But definately won't have a dealer do it if I take it in.
I'd really like to not have that ticking/rattling at 800-1300 rpm, bothers me everytime!

Disconnecting the VCT solenoids will set a code and the check engine light will come on. The light will stay on for a certain number of engine cycles (I don't remember how many exactly) or until you clear the code or disconnect the battery.
The newer style solenoids with the smaller drain hole might solve the problem, or you might have to do the phasers and timing chain tensioners as well.

[QUOTE=lhill58;2577545]If the tensioners are bad you will still get the rpm specific rattle even with new VCT solenoids.[/QUOTE
but by unplugging the solenoids would that stop the tensioner rattle?

The solenoids being unplugged wont affect the tensioners. sometimes you will get cold start chain rattle but I didn't see you mention that. I would get a oil pressure gauge or get it checked at hot idle.

I found this thread very helpful. You could take out the VCT Solenoids and make a change to them or buy news. I purchased new ones at $49 a piece. The passenger side was easy to replace and the drivers side wasn't too bad with the bracket in the way (I ruined one seal.) Combine this change, with 5w-30 oil and my engine tick as basically been eliminated.
