Default Help diagnosing codes

Greetings all! I've been lurking for a few weeks now and after going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole I figured I would take a shot in the dark and see if anybody has had similar issues... I bought a 2004 FX4 with 160k miles on her last week knowing that it needed a little work, but it seems to run alright. Upon getting the truck home I plugged my diagnostic tool in and got the following codes:
  • P0012 - Camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1
  • P0059 - Ho2s heater resistance bank 2 sensor 1
  • P0060 - Ho2s heater resistance bank 2 sensor 2
  • P0172 - System too rich bank 1
  • P2197 - O2 sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1
  • P0152 - O2 circuit high voltage bank 2 sensor 1
  • P000e - Fuel volume regulator control exceeded learning limit
After clearing the codes, I let it sit overnight and started it up the following evening and only got an o2 code after letting it idle for about 5 minutes. I then turned the truck off and restarted it and got a new list of codes:
  • P2197 - O2 sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1 (the only one also in previous list)
  • P0158 - O2 Sensor circuit high voltage bank 2 sensor 2
  • P0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire detected
  • P0316 - Engine misfire detected on startup (first 1000 revolutions)
  • P2197 - O2 sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1 (apparently this guy is a problem!)
Again, it seems to run alright, but I have only driven it the hour it took to get from the seller's place to my house. The truck was purchased to haul my daughter's pigs around for show season so I want to get it right before that begins in December. Do these codes tell anyone a story about what should be tackled first? I assume a fazer job is looming, but wanted to see if anybody could share a different angle on things. Thanks in advance!

I'd imagine those codes indicate bad cats, but I could be wrong.

Sounds like a plugged or failing cat.
After running for a while, see if the cats are glowing red

I would start with all new motorcraft SP546 plugs ... boots and springs.. you have mis-fire DTC's, check the condition of the cats as mentioned above.

Thanks all! A quick update on the situation... The truck hasn't been driven again until today, when my wife drove it to work and to get the tag and all that fun stuff. She said it ran fine and did not display a CEL on the way to work this morning, but as soon as she fired it up to leave this afternoon, the CEL came on and she reports that it is running "rough". She also said she tried looking underneath for anything glowing and from what she could see nothing was.

I'll update again when I get home and pull the codes!

My recommendation as well. If you DIY be sure to torque the new plugs in to 25-28 ft lbs. Also clean the contact surface where the spring connects to the coil... Moisture can get in there sometimes and foul things up.

They have a product on the market lately that we’ve been selling a lot of called CataClean... Supposed to help clear up and clean cats... Bear in mind like much of that stuff that it can usually heal the sick, but won’t revive the dead.

I’d be willing to bet you’re getting the O2 sensor codes as a result of the misfires... So i’d start there and try to resolve that first.

Codes after today's drive:
  • P0012 - a camshaft position timing over retarded bank 1
  • P0172 - system too rich bank 1
  • P0300 - random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
  • P2197 - o2 sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1
  • P0158 - o2 sensor circuit high voltage bank 2 sensor 2
  • P000C - a camshaft position slow response bank 2

Hey guys, wanted to update this thread with the latest on my truck. After sitting at the mechanic for nearly three weeks, he suggested replacing the VCT sensors if I felt comfortable doing them myself but said it would be cost prohibitive for them to do so since the valve covers had to be removed... While I appreciated his honesty and suggestion, a quick search on youtube revealed that the covers do not need to be removed on the 04's, and I was able to change them out in about an hour! The sensors that came out didn't look that bad (I'll try to post some pics of them later) but the next time out I began to think it may have fixed things as it seemed to run great, but lo and behold when started up after the initial voyage, it now throws the following codes:
  • P2197 - o2 Sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1 (pending)
  • P0012 - A Camshaft Position Timing over-retarded Bank 1 (pending)
  • P2197 - o2 Sensor signal biased/stuck lean bank 2 sensor 1 (stored)
I can clear the codes and the truck seems to run fine until it is turned off and restarted. Has anyone had similar issues that could lead me down a path? Am I causing potential irreparable damages by clearing the codes and driving it? Thanks again for all of the replies so far!

The VCT sensors (I assume you mean cam position sensor) are on the front of the timing cover. The valve covers don't need to be removed for that, not just on the 04's, but on any year that used this engine.

They changed something up in 07 that requires valve cover removal... https://www.f150forum.com/f4/vct-sol...uccess-210473/
