Is this indicator location (not on the gear being used) correct for a 2006 4.6 4wd STX model, or it can be adjusted? How? Thanks

 

i think there is some adjustment, but more than likely the little cable is stretched out

Seems like there's a little wheel you can turn to adjust it, but I think it's behind the column shroud if memory serves.

The cable mounts with the thumbwheel often break
When I hit the junkyard looking, I get them all (5 at a time)
They are not available separate; you must buy a new PRNDL indicator assembly (expensive) + most likely obsolete by now
This is what you need, there are 2 styles

 

You can get 'em off a Tarus or Crown Vic too
* You can inspect and adjust that thumbwheel with the column shrouds in place
