Got my 05 5.4 5 months ago. I have no complaints about this truck. She runs good and never had problems towing even after the lift and bigger tires. Only thing I had to replace was brakes but that is normal ****.

I bought a 06 5.4 with 125k on it 1 1/2 yrs ago. Got it from a wholesaler who gets them at auction and flips them. The exterior paint is worn but the engine, transmission and suspension are super solid. In the time I had it I've only had to replace the catalytic(bad when I bought it) and front wheel bearings. I use it more than I expected and put 13K on it even though it's my 3rd vehicle. I suspect it may still have the original spark plugs in it!! My confidence has grown and grown the longer I've had it that I made an excellent choice for only spending $7500.

I own a 06 5.4 and love it. I have done the usual maintenance and she hasn't let me down once. I bought it used in Atlanta, GA. and was trailered from Montgomery, AL...Hank Williams, SR. country! I have about 6 more months and the truck will be all mine. Keeping the truck and having a lot of fun with it too! BTW, I love the 2015 F150 but the sticker price will be a killer!

I was feeling the same way about my truck. The more I drove it, the more I found that needed to be fixed. I felt like I'd made a bad purchase until I realized that even if I had to fix everything on my list every 90K miles, with proper maintenance the rest of the truck would probably run forever!

I hear ya man. Its just like wow I bought this thing for its reliability and relatively low cost of ownership. Of course its already better than my SVT Focus I had. I was going through o2 sensors weekly for a while.

I have an 08 XLT. I like the newer truck and I test drive them a lot but to be honest, I haven't pulled the trigger at all, even when the dealer offered me MORE that what I paid for my 08 as a trade in. I love this truck, it's awesome and has been VERY reliable, Don't get me wrong it has it's fair share of issues but it's more because where I live the road SUCKS really bad so they cause a lot of extra wear, so I'm replacing certain things earlier than I normally would have too but I don't mind, my truck is totally worth it. The best way to determine which is better for you is simple, keep your eye out for a good deal, and test drive both model years. I love that my truck is a truck, simple and raw. I don't have traction control, I only have ABS, and I LOVE that fact. It's a much rawer driving experience. As for towing, I have a 22ft car trailer and tow a few cars and quads and other things from time to time, truck pulls it NO problem ever. I will cry when the day comes I have to give up my truck. No joke.

Default Be patient there are deals out there

I looked for about 8 months for a truck. Found a one owner from a local home builder that traded in 2 05 5.4's. 135K on 1, A 175K on the FX4 which I bought for a song. Dealer sold it to me without going through the shop so I left an hour after he traded it in. Added a new set of tires, Loaded with Leather(don't think anyone ever sat in the backseat and the passenger seats looks new), Power everything, no tears or rips, seat is still level, NO dents, Minor scratch here and there. Black paint, absolutely no rust and runs great. Also added a Bluetooth radio.

Only issue is the overdrive jump uphill at 50mph. Added an edge tuner and tuned the shifting so hardly noticeable, added some seafoam and drive! I love this truck! Oh btw plugs were done at 140,000 so I don't have that to worry about for while.

Default Can't go wrong!!

I bought my '05 F150 4X4 XLT w/5.4 new in Jan '06. Had a sticker of $35k! Not! Paid $23k with 3 miles on it. Has gotten 15-17 mpgs to date. Only problems; 4x4 actuator failed under warranty, replaced noisy serpentine idlers, probably from revving too many times through the gears. Replaced Dyna Pro tires at 57k, (if winter wasn't coming, they would have lasted another year easily), all brake pads by 70k. And the latest, new rear shocks at 76k miles!! Awesome ride, starts and runs perfect. But it does have some odd noises in the cold. Don't know what it is, but just read this forum for ideas. It doesn't matter what you buy, they all have issues. It doesn't matter if its a Ford, Chev, or Nissan and Toyota, hate to say; Dodge. All you read is the bad stuff, people don't brag about the good stuff, only the problems. Buy what you want and expect, it may break down if its a used vehicle. I've heard of these trucks going over 250k without a problem. Keep up on the maintenance items, it always pays. Good luck!

I've got 175k on my 05 with no real issue and the previous owner didn't take the best care of it. Only real problems with these are spark plugs(one time issue) and cam phasers in some of the earlier trucks.
