Do you have any places you'd recommend to buy a new or remanufactured motor from? I'm still going to have the exhaust shop that turned me down on the manifolds to have them confirm that's what the noise is. So I don't drive 250 miles to the other shop for no reason! I really don't want to spend $4000 on a new motor installed in my truck and I don't want to do it myself. If it were as easy as swapping out motors like I did in my '76 Camaro it would be a cinch! If anyone knows where to buy a motor for a good price let me know.

Just an idea

Maybe try to sea foam the fuel and if it starts smoking around the heads to see if you have a manifold leak?

I'm going with exhaust. Going by mine and what I've read, when you rev it up - the phasers usually get quiet. Your noise follows the rpm's.

Yeah after watching a couple videos on Youtube of exhaust leaks on F150s, mine sounds just like that. I'll get it confirmed this week and let everyone know what's going on with it. Thanks for all the help.

That's good to know because the shop I took it to check for the manifold leak said that wasn't the issue. The mechanic said it was a sound he was not familiar with but was pointing to cylinder #6 that had the loudest noise. He said could be "knock sensors" making the timing retarded. Sounds like cam phasers and the whole works. BTW spark plugs and coils have all been changed 2 months ago. Could a loose plug cause constant ticking? So now I'm back to looking for a new motor. Any suggestions?

Absolutely.. a loose plug will tick like a manifold leak.

I'd say its probably not the knock sensor... If the sound is pronounced at a certain cylinder, then that's where I'd look... I agree with masitile, it could just be a loose plug, definitely check that first.. But if its not a plug, then pull that valve cover off and take a look... I'm willing to bet the problems in the head itself... It Could even be a oil blockage issue in that head.

The plug will sound like a leaky manifold, I used to no my lightning was about to blow a plug out of the head. You should be able to distinguish that from the actual manifold. I would check them, I bet as especial said the problem is in the head could be a bad lash adjuster, why it cant still be a lifter or a rocker.

Something else I was wondering about after reading on here about the injectors going bad and having a loud tick. Is that something I would get a code for? How do you tell an injector tick from a loose plug sound? There are too many damn ticks in this motor, it's getting tired and so am I.
