Thanks for the response, I went back out to the truck and found the timing notch, it was covered by a good spot of mud right on the spot. I have only owned this truck for a couple months, apparently the PO spent a lot of time mudding, the entire skid plate was caked with mud. I think I have the cam lobes in the correct position now, gonna pull the harmonic balancer off in the morning, and give the water pump pulley a couple of love taps and then pull the cover. Then the real fun begins. Thanks for the advice on this, I just need to get it right the first time because this is my daily driver to work and I only have this week off, should be enough time though.

Got the timing cover off now, loosened up the phaser bolts also. The right side chain guide was broken in 4 pieces, 1 piece is still mounted that is broke, got 2 pieces that were stuck next to the chain, 1 unaccounted for at this time. I really hope I find it as I have to get this thing back together in the next couple of days for work, hopefully I don't have to go fishing in the oil pan, its a pretty good size piece, that's where it probably is. Have some pretty nice scuff marks on the inside of the timing cover where the chain was slapping, guess I found part of my noise. Gonna take a break and then pull the cams so I can change out all of the lash adjusters and the followers before I do the timing set and phasers. Tom

If there are any peices of the guides that are unaccounted for, then you need to pull the pan and find them. If you don't, then you'll be doing this job again soon if you're lucky, or replacing the motor if you're unlucky. They have a bad habit of blocking the oil pump pickup screen.

Some pics of progress
Here are some pics of the progress so far
New Lash Adjusters and Followers installed
Had 4 bad lash adjusters on the left side, they are the ones that are not lying flat
Inside of the timing cover where the wear from the chain slap was hitting
Broken guide on the left side, gotta go fishing for pieces in the oil pan.
Is this the Grey RTV that has been talked about on here for use on the gaskets?

Question, the cam holders on the right side have an arrow toward the front of the vehicle with a number but the ones on the left side do not, I know that I put the left side holders back in the original location but is there a way to know if they are facing the right direction? On my motorcycle, each cap is clearly marked with location and direction, kind of strange that one side has numbers and arrows and the other side does not?

Well another progress update, put the right side cam back in and it kept turning on me. Luckily I had marked it on a couple of spots to line up with the cam holder. Even luckier, my son was home from school and was able to hold it with the vice grips. Man, that really worried me for a while there because it kept turning on me. End result, 24 new lash adjusters and followers installed, 13 bad lash adjusters out of 24 bad. On to the timing components now and hopefully be buttoning it back up by tomorrow and test driving it tomorrow night. A buddy brought me an AC vacuum so that I can vacuum the system out before I fill it.
