i removed the handle from my tailgate to paint the whole handle and want to remove the actual handle from the housing and my question is, is it hard to remove the pin from the handle i tried to punch it out with a hammer but not using too much force to not risk breaking something and it didnt much much at all maybe spray some wd40 and let it sit for a bit?

If my memory is correct one end has a head on it and the other end is pinched so it will not come out... If this is correct, you may have to cut the rod to remove it.
