Default remote start issues

so i have an 08 STX with about 40k miles i bought it about 2 years ago with 13k on it from a dealer it had a ford remote start on it when i got it never any issues. Now when i try to start it with the remote the truck does every thing it used to ie: lock doors flash lights honk horn and so forth. Except start wont even crank. When i get in the truck everything is on like heat dome lights radio and even turns everything off when i hit the brakes with out the keys in it all like normal minus the engine running part......i am a pretty decent back yard mechanical kinda guy but know nothing about eletronics any clues that can help me out before the dealership bends me over would be very greatful thanks

I dont know about the 08's but I ran into a similar problem with my 2011 that I bought off the lot. After about 6 months the remote start wouldn't work and the truck would have a hard time starting with the key even though all the electronics were fine as well as the starter and battery. It turned out to be a bad key (the key and remote are one unit). Once the dealership replaced the key everything was back to normal.

i called the dealer and they said either the key fob needs to be reprogramed or the module needs to be replaced seems like a vague dealer responce to me but i havent been able to find anything obvious yet and with the holidays coming up i cant justify spending the cash to let the dealer throw parts at it seeing as the remote start is sorta a luxary

Do the remote start and watch your securelock light on top of the dash. If it starts flashing red like mad, it's not reading the bypass. Then you can do a second test, put your key in the ignition (don't turn on), remote start.. If it starts, it's definitely related to the chipped key.

If it's the chipped key, one of two things happened: Bypass module is shot, or somehow the transponder code of the bypass has become forgotten (I know, seems odd). I recently worked on a Ford Escape that somehow lost the bypass code. I relearned it and no problem!

If the case seems related to the transponder, try this to reprogram (you need 2 working keys):

1. Insert first key into ignition, turn ignition on for at least one second but no longer than ten seconds, then off.
2. Within 10 seconds, insert second key, turn on for at least one second but no longer than ten seconds, then off.
3. Within 10 seconds, remote start vehicle (do NOT have key in ignition so it can read bypass code if it's working).

If it starts, it's successfully relearned the 3rd key. If it doesn't, your bypass is probably shot.

When you remote started it that second time after doing the sequence, it started with no key in it? If it wasn't reading the bypass it technically shouldn't have started.

I would try this first:

Try the sequence again, first key, second key, remote start but DON'T put the key in the ignition. Kill it with the brake, THEN try remote starting on it's own. I'm not 100% sure but by putting the key in when you hit the brake it might have done something different. I'm not 100% sure when the computer writes the transponder code to memory. I know it READS of course when you first key in and start, but it may not save it until ignition off. I'm guessing here as I haven't tried programming mine that way myself (I wish I had another key, I'd try it).

It shouldn't have remote started after the sequence if it didn't read the PATS. If I get a chance after, I'll go do a quick test on mine.

Secondly:

If it is the bypass, it could be a number of things... Wire came loose (maybe foot hit it), burned out, etc... Some Bypass modules actually take permanent power (12 volts + ground) and have a 12 volt or ground input to activate it. It may even make a difference to unplug the bypass module for 2 seconds then plug it back in. If you look for it, there'll be the remote start unit too which is much bigger than the bypass and with more wires. There'll likely only be 2 or 3 wires to it, then another 2 to go up to the key cylinder so it should be relatively easy to find. The remote starter looks like it's doing as it should (unless it's not trigger the bypass to turn on for some reason but I highly doubt that). I would try unplugging it, then plugging it back in.

Worst case you could disconnect the battery for a few seconds to see if that verifies the bypass module is locked up or similar (depending on brand) but of course you'll lose your presets, etc. I'd probably see if you can find the bypass under the dash first (shouldn't be hard to find).

With the PATS light, it's definitely related to the bypass. I'm just hoping it's either unprogrammed, unplugged, or locked up (depending on brand of course). That would save you from having to purchase a new bypass .
