Default Rear end clunk, need some ideas

Folks,

I have been having a weird issue lately, and I hope you can help.

I have been getting a clunk that sounds like it is coming from the rear of my truck, it sounds like what a front trashed ball joint would sound like...but it is in the rear. Now, it doesn't happen when I brake at all, and isn't when I accelerate...so both the u-joint and brakes are ok.

The clunk happens when I turn...I check the spare tire to make sure it wasn't loose and clunking around, the tire is tight.

Any thoughts?

Do you have a limited slip? Was the rear end serviced lately? Any leaks? Mileage?

I have the stock differential, serviced myself with Amsoil, no chattering on take off at all. Just a clunking when turning side to side...

Did you add 4oz of the Motorcraft LS friction modifier to the fluid?

Check for a lose vibration dampener under the bed of your truck.

This is typical on a lot of trucks. There is a C clip that holds your axle is, but sometimes theres still some side to side play. Mine does it too.

Not really a fix for it as far as I know.

OK, first things first, where is the vibration dampener and can I tighten it up myself and easily (no removal of bed)?

I have an ARE short cap that I thought might be loose and moving from side to side, but I tried to move it and it appears to be tight. My experience with ARE recently in backing up their "warranty" regarding the failure of the clear coat, has been typically poor, but the mechanicals are working fine, it appears.

Now as for the circlip, surely there must be something that will tighten this up...the clunk is getting worse, and I have held this thing together and it is working well, I have to believe there is some fix?

If you are having an issue with the C-clip sliding in your rear end, you can check by jacking the rear up, remove the Rims/tires and the brakes, grasp the hub where you wheels mount, push in and hen give it a good jerk, if it's the clips you should hear the same noise your describing.
