Your supposed to change it if your axle goes under water... That's what I always heard

Submerging or driving your axle through deep water. Metal fatigue in the gears.

It's oil, so it's going to wear out eventually. You should always change your diff fluid if your axle gets completely submerged.

I put my rear axle under water all the time taking my boat in and out of the water. After three years of this I thought I should change the rear end and it still looked like new, not milky at all.

The guys doing my oil change said it was black and looked worse than they had ever seen, at the time their vacuum pump was broken so they couldn't pump it out. Today I stopped back to have it changed and the guy in the pit said that it had some metal in it.

I have been taking my vehicles to this shop for about 10 years and trust these guys, they are not the run of the mill $19.95 oil change place. The owner said that he was really surprised because the Ford gear lube is usually really good.

Why would a shop that you trust so much vacume out the oil instead of pulling the cover and clean and inspect the gears and housing. A vacume is not going to pick up debris from the bottem of the case. Sounds like a lazy mans short cut to me. Note if you have a positraction black oil is clutch wear and normal.
