I have heard that a king ranch cluster will not work in our trucks either, go for an STX or a FX4 cluster. I have a lariat cluster in mine, which I think looks amazing, but it doesn't work with our air conditioning. Due to a different climate control module. The lariat has a thermometer inside the truck and adjusts the temp automatically to whatever you set the desired temp at . You have to swap a whole bunch of stuff out to get the air conditioning to work, but Heat still works. So I took all my ac **** off to save some precious power.
Geez Leweeeze MUDKING that awesome photo belongs on Fords next sales Pamphlet, seriously, nice shot

the advantage of the lariat/xlt/fx4 cluster swap is you gain a tachometer. The base XL cluster does not have one. But you may loose some functionality depending on the cluster you get. If you get a lariat you will lose you ac function. Unless the buy the tempature tube( basically a thermometer) and you also have to buy the ac control panel out a lariat. Replace the cluster surround and get one out of a lariat that has buttons for the data center in the dash. If you plan on doing it, the XLT is best one to try to get. My engine is built is built, so I didn't mind taking my ac components off.

As I wrote up in my speedo cluster swap thread, the best cluster swap for an XL or STX that did not come with a tach is to get the cluster from a truck that had a manual transmission (they all had tachs), or an XLT model. You will LOOSE NOTHING in the way of cluster functions or A/C or overhead lighting functions. The only concern would be your mileage; if you want it to match exactly, it will have to be flashed. There are many of these clusters for sale on EBay, so you should be able to locate one very close to your current cluster's mileage. I've seen them priced between 50 to 125 bucks. Go to EBay, and search on "04 08 F150 cluster"

Here's on on ebay right now with no bids, and starting bid is 30 bucks. It would be the perfect replacement for your truck:

Another one for 75 bucks, or best offer (160K on its odometer):

I just want to be sure as there is so much information out there, some conflicting. For my 2006 XL, I can use the cluster from an XLT and not lose any functionality. If the cluster comes from a Lairat or King Ranch I will lose some functions. If I want the milage to be correct, the XLT cluster must be flashed either by a dealership or speedo shop. I want to thank y'all for helping me understand this! Have a great day!!!

Thanks for any help.
I have a 2006 XL that did not come with cruise. I purchased Motorcraft switches from Rockauto.com, installed them, and then paid the local Ford dealer about $50 to activate the cruise control as well as program a couple new keys for me (mine only came with one key). There was a pretty good thread on this install somewhere here in the forums.

As for the cluster, I put in an XLT cluster when my XL oil and fuel gauges quit working. The XLT gauges with the Tach look great, but I lost the headlight reminder and door opening headliner light features. I was able to run a jumper from the headlight switch to the door wire to get the headliner light working again and plan on wiring in a buzzer I bought for the headlight reminder. Of course the XLTs temp and compass displays just show dashes. Again, if you search a little there are threads already on most mods to get swapped cluster features working again.

Good luck on your mods, hope you enjoy the truck!
