Questions Before Purchasing 04-08 F150

Hey all,
I am looking to purchase an F150 because my tiny G35 sports car simply isn't practical anymore. I have browsed around the forum and done a bit of searching but still have some questions before pulling the trigger:

-What are the differences between the model years 2004-2008?
-I found a great thread on the differences in trims (Lariat, FX4, XLT) But what is Super Cab, Supercrew (Screw?) Does it only pertain to the Cab size?
-I am set on the Lariat trim but is it worth my time to find one with the FX4 and Lariat?

I am looking to get a 4 door 4WD lariat with lower miles (<85k). What would y'all consider a good price?

Thanks in Advance

2004-2005 have a few more problems than 2006-2008 like cam phasers and Spark plugs. Super cab has a small back seat and Super Crew has 4 full doors. Around 20k would be a good price.

Welcome to the Forum! Super Cab is what Ford calls an extended cab, it has 2 rear suicide doors. Not any difference as far as body style 04-08. I would recommend researching the spark plug replacement (recommended change after 100k) and cam phasers(what to listen for) like bpmarmstrong suggested. 04-05s are abit more finicky about CAIs and have more problems running lean.
Price-I would hit up Kelley Blue Book and see what prices are. Even hit "Trades and Sales" here on the forum and see what people are asking. You might find one you like there. Happy truck hunting!

Phasers are an exclusive issue for 04 - 08, and some 09's. The timing chain guides and tensioners can break requiring a full timing system overhaul. The plugs are much more likely to break on an 04 and 05 but can still break off on the redesigned heads.
Other known issues are the FPDM rotting out above the spare tire.
Cab corner rust.
Gas door rust.
Water leaking in the 3rd brake light housing.
Cloth interiors stain easily.
Throttle body's require regular cleanings.
These are the more common issues.

The plus sides are far greater then the negatives. These 5.4 3 valves can pull a house down at low rpm's (sarcasm)
They can also last well into the 300,000 mile range if you abandon 5w-20 for a quality 5w-30, depending on your region. (I have seen this with my own eyes, but its still just my opinion)
The transmission is very durable.
The interior is the best in its class. Driving a lariat or king ranch will be the best driving experience in a truck that you will ever had.

I spent over a year and a half hunting for my truck. The dealers all wanted 20 - 18k for a supercrew. So I saved my marbles, haggled and dropped $10k cash on an 04 supercrew loaded with tons of extras from Craigslist, with 110k miles. I hate parting with my money, but this truck was a steal!

If you got the cash and the patience then the world is your oyster. Dealers will gouge you because these trucks are in high demand. But man, in this economy, you can find some real good deals.
I hope this helps!

Okay thanks for the quick responses guys. Definitely set on the Supercrew Lariat. Interior is a big thing for me coming from a luxury sedan. Will I be disappointed that I didn't get the FX4 offroad wise? The truck will probably see some light offroading/mudding.

You won't be disappointed man ill get some quick pics of my lariat outside and inside if you like I won't mind. I do a lot of off roading almost every weekend due to my old man having a ranch with horses and cattles. It's a great truck I love it

Not at all I have a 2005 FX4 Fully loaded with leather and power everything! Also factory dealer installed lockers and factory 10.75 rear end which came in the F250! I have all options as the Lariat Except more off road capable! Which is defiantly used!

Both are good in my opinion
