Problem with my 06 f150
I've read and searched many many forums all over the web and at first thought my problem was related to the common cam phaser / vct solenoid tick or knock, but now I'm not sure at all. I was finally able to get a recording of my problem and after comparing with other videos on youtube and other forums, I really don't know for sure what it is. This story might be long but I want to be clear on my problem.
I bought a 06 f150 SCrew 4x4 5.4l auto with around 56,000 miles in January of 2012. The only problem at the time was a leaking rear main seal. I fixed that right away because it was easy with some help. It also had the common injector tap. Then the Thursday before Memorial weekend I changed the oil using Motorcraft 10w30 (what it calls for) and a Wix filter from OReillys. I've changed oil many times before but this was my first time with this truck and it ran fine.
On that Saturday, I pulled (1st time with this truck) a boxed trailer with 2 fourwheelers and other gear about 200 miles. All was fine until I got to the campground stopped and asked where I should park, someone told me to pull up and around a slight hill. All of a sudden it sounded like I threw a rod. I couldn't stop where I was so kept going to the spot to park and power and oil pressure was normal the whole time. I turned off the truck and got out to look at the engine. A friend said he thought it sounded like the fan hitting the shroud maybe. I started the truck back up and it was just the normal injectors tapping.
I left it alone until we were getting ready to leave. I let it run a while and after everything was loaded up I had told a few people that would be following me to keep an eye out for me on the side of the road! I thought it might make this noise again so I had my phone ready to record any noise to show someone. I made it all the way home with no problems and it was hotter when I left the campground than it was when I got there.
Then about 2 weeks later I came home from a night out with some friends, I pulled into my parking lot and as soon as I started backing into my parking spot it made the same sound as before so I got out and recorded a short video. You can’t really see anything but I popped the hood and found out I don’t have a hood light (first time opening the hood at night!) so I went and opened my back door to get a flashlight, all while holding my phone. As you notice it’s a really loud knock. Then turned the truck off and started it and it sounded like normal with the injector tap.
I can do some mechanic work and have friends but if it will be quicker I might take it to a shop, but I really don’t like my local ford stealership, so I’d like to keep away unless absolutely necessary. I also don’t want my wallet to be emptied and my credit cards maxed out to fix it. Thanks a lot to anyone that has some good advice. Everyone I know, that’s more mechanically inclined than me, just says to take it to FORD because they don’t know much about the newer engines or don’t want to deal with it!
Thank you very much.

Why is the "HTML code" off? and why can't I get the video embedded?

That sounds too fast to be in the bottom end at idle and too slow to be the fan.
My bet is its in the heads or timing chain area.
Next time it happens, leave the truck in and use a long prybar or something and hold it to your ear as you move the bar to different parts of the motor. When it's load and clear you'll know where it is.
