Default Help! dealer just quoted cam phasers

Dealer just "diagnosed" cam phasers and possible timing chain but won'y know till he gets in there. low end estimate $3000. may have to replace engine. I've read through here and see where the VCT solenoid has helped when replaced. Is mine to far gone? It makes a horrible racket sometimes not just the annoying tick. I have a video but cant seem to get it loaded..

Don't panic......yet.

If I were you I would replace both solenoids first. it is an easy DIY project, +/- $100 for the pair and 30 minutes work. Will know right away if it works. I suggest you replace the rubber boots as well.
Good luck

You can do the work yourself for about $1000

Just completed VCT Solenoid Replacement (both). Truck runs good but occasionly still shudders like it wants to start the shaking and knocking again, but no where near what it was. DDrove for about 25 minutes including up the mountain, did pretty good but when I came to a stop up the mountain it died out twice. Could this be computer re-learn???

Mine does that too during the computer relearn process. If I go through the full relearn process as listed in the "Look Here" thread on page 1 of this year group, and then drive it for about 30 or 40 minutes, it still may stall once or twice in the next week but then clears up and idles perfectly.

Default That's the worst sludge I have ever saw .

I would have left the old parts in and done an engine flush twice . Then dropped oil pan and checked oil pickup for plastic . Then done a timing job and cleaned everything .
What a mess , let me know how this engine was treated so I can go the other way .
No wonder they recommended a reman .

So I'm hoping this is the right spot for this without making a new thread.

2004 f150 just replaced the motor with a 2006 out of a junk yard, my dad and brother helped rebuild it. New bearings, piston rings, etc, new timing components, new FORD phasers and VCTs, cloyes timing kit, milling oil pump as per final repair guide, new gaskets everywhere obviously.

Issue- truck ticks faintly when it's in park or without a load on it, quiet as silk accelerating from a stop until like 2nd gear. The tick/rattle is there on highway until you climb a hill, then it's quiet. Anyone think this is a phaser, or vct acting up even tho they have 500 miles on them?

When you take the oil fill cap off you can hear a tick of some sort. Rev it up in park, it's very noticeable. I'm not sure where to look and why would it go away under a load? With makes me think timing phaser is engaging and making it quiet.
Any help is much appreciated!

If it's only doing with the engine unloaded it could be a loose tourqe converter nut, or maybe a loose flexplate..
Are you sure this sound is the phaser tick?

Before you go tearing into her do a thorough inspection for any loose accessories, brackets, pulleys and bolts..

Interesting thought on the torque converter nuts, I'll check them out thanks
