Don't bother with painting your present bumpers new black replacements are so cheap
just get purchase a set, look at the link below as an example. You didn't state the year of your truck please remember to do so it helps use out here.

If you look hard enough you can probably find a set off hand (this would probably be cheapest). I bought a set of chrome bumpers for my old truck from a guy who put a set of aftermarket (painted bumpers on his). Other than that, I would probably buy set to be painted and done right. it would probably set you back a few.
My buddy did the same with the wheels on his dodge. He had hubcaps, but came acrossed a guy who sold him some factory 20's for a couple hundred bucks.
Can the stock xl bumpers be painted. Im sure someone would love to take a set of chrome bumpers in return for the base ones. That would be a win win.

I agree with the body shops and the advice you got from the other guys here. You're not going to be able to scuff a chrome part so there is no way the paint will adhere properly.

I know for a fact it won't work cause the Ford dealership tried.
When I went and ordered my 04, I made it very clear it was to be solid black, no chrome bumpers, grill etc and told them this was the only way I would buy it. At the time you could not get one in solid color off the lot unless it was an FX4.

When it arrived it had chrome bumpers and I refused to take it, so they tried painting it, it flaked, they sand blasted the chrome off, it flaked, they painted it again, it flaked again. After 3 repaintings, they finally ordered some paintable bumpers

Iron Bull makes some sweet replacement bumpers for the F150 and they only come in black....that would give the truck a sweet look along with the murdered out look...unless of course you are lowering your truck
