Passenger Head Issue

I have an 04 5.4 3valve vin5, a passenger side valve fell out and got bent by the piston. It knocked a hole in the piston and destroyed the head which I will replace both. There's some light scarring at the top of the cylinder wall, above the piston rings so do I still need to hone that cylinder or is it OK since the scarring is at the top, above the piston rings and shouldn't lose compression. Thanx in advance for any and all input

Any pics??

Also, have you considered putting 08 heads on? The newer style plugs will be able to be used if you do so.

I assume you will be replacing the rings when you replace the piston so you should hone the cylinder to insure the rings seat. I dont know the millage on your engine but if it were me I would consider re ringing and hone all 8 and replace at least the rod bearings as well since your 1/2 way there all ready.

Money is tight so that's not an option. I have to get a head, piston/rod and maybe consider the single cylinder bore. Again the scarring is at the very top of the cylinder wall where it meets the head so is the bore absolutely nessesary

Sounds like you already have you answer. I'd do a dingle-ball rebuild on that cylinder and call it good.

I had the exact same thing happen to my last year. I got lucky, and the piston smacked the valve and bent it enough to keep it from dropping in and destroying anything. Reman head (and new phasers and other fun stuff while I was in there), and she's back on the road.

I'd recommend a new oil pump while you have the timing cover off. You can separate the pump from the pick up without dropping the pan. I believe low oil pressure (RH cam shaft is the last to get oiled) is the reason for these issues. This is a "fairly" common issue.

You mentioned hone in your first post then later bore. there is a world of deference. If money is tight then consider finding a broken engine at a salvage yard, grab the parts you need and re assemble. if the block damage is truly above the uppermost ring travel and the block is not cracked and the gasket surface is not scarred then you just might get away with it. My previous post was in consideration of the cost of new parts and honing not boring.

Found cylinder scarred all the way down today, going to buy a reman. By the way found a company that has remans for 1800.00 legit

Sounds like a deal if it is a long block with heads good luck on the install hope all goes well.

1800 is way low to me. What company? Long block? Short? Something is off here.

check out Jasper engines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUdLPh25c0w They use a Melling M360 oil pump to stop the oil starvation issue with the phasers.
