Look for things that might fail - bearings, ball joints, wiring, hoses - and change them before they fail. Keep a spare alternator and starter on the shelf so you can buy quality items on your own terms. Do your own oil changes - not to save money but because its a good chance to crawl under the truck and have a good look at it. Keep it clean so leaks show up immediately.
Luckily, I already have a stash of failure-prone items. The good thing is, they're just collecting dust in storage
I already do all of my own maintenance, so I can usually spot an issue pretty quickly!

The day will come when I find myself under a payment. I don't expect mine to last forever. With a book value of 6 grand, I can't see myself dumping thousands into a truck with this many miles, not knowing what else may be on the way out.
Trying to stay positive lol

No vehicle out of warranty should ever have a loan attached to it.

Here is an eye opener. My brother in law bought a new 3500 Duramax last summer. The dealer told him he was the only person he had sold a truck to in a few years that didn't require gap insurance because he had a decent down payment. These days people don't seem to be able to save very well.

Oh I’m not surprised by any means, especially with the amount of Salt Lifers buying those $80k rigs to tow their bass boat twice a year these days. I know plenty of guys who’ve made a good living flipping $300k foreclosures. Just the thought of having to make a payment on something one couldn’t afford to immediately fix is a tough pill to swallow. (as in, out of warranty). OP congrats on working towards getting right side up on the truck, may nothing go wrong that requires money.

Unfortunately, I bought from a dealership. Like many on here and around the country, I didn't want to pay the truck up front and loose cash that I could be using for other things on top of the truck. I got a great rate and was paid off early. Now, I do agree that a truck that is a complete $ hit box should NEVER be financed...

And thanks for the well wishes. This truck has been fantastic and intend to keep it that way for many more years to come. Thankfully, no salt down here!
